Tapping Out | Fareham Live
Review
There’s something truly wonderful about watching a group of unlikely dancers slowly find their feet. Stepping Out delivers plenty of laughs, a generous helping of heart and enough tap to keep the audience’s toes twitching.

This is a story about ordinary people facing very real problems, finding friendship, confidence and a much needed escape through a weekly dance class. They may not all have been blessed with rhythm, one or two initially look as though they’re trying to put socks on in the dark, but their infectious determination is impossible not to warm to.

Lucy Benjamin is superb as the nosy and insecure Vera, while Karen Hauer brings elegance and authority to dance teacher Mavis. Kerry Enright is a bubbly joy as the boisterous Sylvia, with Devon-Elise Johnson bringing bags of energy and talent to Lynne. Carli Norris delivers a wonderfully outspoken Maxine, while Laura Tyrer gives a beautifully understated performance as the stoic, downtrodden Andy.

Wendy Mae Brown and Sophie-Louise Dann add further sparkle, while Ben Stock makes an incredible impression as Geoffrey. A special mention must go to Felicity Duncan, who is terrific as Mrs Fraser, delivering a performance that hits all the right notes or, in this case, steps.
Watching this wonderfully mismatched bunch stumble, shuffle, kick and gradually become a team is both hilarious and genuinely touching.
There’s heart, humour and thankfully, very little chance of the show putting a foot wrong.
Stepping Out doesn’t just find its feet, it dances straight into your heart.

THANK YOU, STEPPING OUT 🎭⭐️

Where do I even start?

To my cast, @laura_tyrer @damecarlinorris @lucybenjaminofficial @benstockbiz @enright.kerry @devonelise24 @flick.duncan, Wendy and @chevaungreenhill . ❤️ What a special group of people you are. We’ve laughed, learned, supported each other, and shared something I know I’ll never forget.

Each of you has taught me something, not just about performing, but about people, kindness and being present. I feel incredibly lucky that our paths crossed and that I got to experience this with you all.

And to Chris Jordan, thank you for giving me this opportunity and for believing in me. Not many people will take a chance on someone, and I’ll always be grateful that you did.

This play has opened my mind, not just as a performer, but as a human being. It’s given me so much to think about, and I know I’ll always come back to it in my thoughts.

Thank you for everything. What a journey. ❤️

Tapped our little hearts out. 🤍

🫣I hadn’t realised how much of a recluse I’d become.

So much of acting now happens alone:

Learning lines.
Working on scenes.
Setting up self-tapes.
Watching them back.
Take after take.
Sending them off.
Waiting.

And somewhere along the way, I think I’d become rather too comfortable with my own company.

Then this week came a very good reminder to get out of the house.

Earlier this year I performed in Dead Guilty @theatreattabard with @benny.julia.faulkner and @flick.duncan

Felicity is now in Stepping Out — another Richard Harris play — @eastbourne_theatres so Julia, @mariannetds @lucyclaytonart and I decided to make a little road trip of it 🚘

🥂A night in Eastbourne, new friends, theatre, talking, laughing, eating and drinking.

Nothing particularly profound happened 😂

But I came home feeling lighter, more energised and very glad that I’d “stepped out”!

It reminded me that however solitary this profession can sometimes become, the people you meet through it can be one of its greatest rewards.

Thanks ladies 🫶

The best team!
Sometimes good things are put in your way when you least expect them but when you need them the most.
I can’t thank these wonderful human beans for being the support system I needed after the death of my beloved mamma. Love and laughter throughout the process.
Grateful.
