Sink your teeth into our recent official selection for the The First Cut Horror Film Festival 2026 - MEAT by UNCW graduate Michael Skanes!

@meat.shortfilm : A doting wife, a controlling husband, and an appetite for revenge.

Director Biography:

@michael.skanes is an award-winning creative marketing producer, currently working at Warner Bros. as a Senior Producer/ Editor. Michael interviews talent, shoots BTS, cuts trailers, and produces content in-house as well as in collaboration with vendors to create high-end marketing campaigns for HBO MAX. A few recent shows he’s had the pleasure to work on include Peacemaker, Welcome to Derry, The White Lotus, House of the Dragon, The Pitt, The Righteous Gemstones, and Harley Quinn.

In his spare time, Michael continues to pursue his creative ambitions by writing, directing, and editing short films. His latest, MEAT, is a short thriller/ horror drama with a hint of dark comedy and it’s currently traveling the festival circuit. Some of his other shorts include the award-winning and multi-festival nominated horror short Mamu (2022), Parasomnia (2024), Flat (2018), and A Slight Hiccup (2015).

Director Statement:

MEAT originated from an idea I pitched to Stephanie (co-writer), who is a colleague at HBO and avid horror fan. We had previously written a project together for work and I was thrilled to have her take the lead to pen this script. We both discussed that given the subject matter we would recruit a strong female team, to which I looked to for guidance and authenticity in telling this story. Our lead producer, @christinecelozzi played a pivotal role in helping us assemble our team and I’m proud of what we created together through our partnership and collaboration.

Wowee, five years gone already?? Time sure flies when you’re having fun!

What a great ride the last five years have been for me. I made so many friends and memories, got to experience so many new things, and discovered so much about myself that I probably would have never experienced if I never left my little hometown just east of Raleigh. I’ve had triumphs and losses throughout this past half decade, and if I could, I’d do it all over again just to experience everything for the first time again.

Thanks UNCW and Disney College Program.
