Last night I fell down a very charming rabbit hole: the history of the analog photobooth.

I saw Spirit of the Photobooth at the International Center of Photography (ICP) on Ludlow Street—a documentary tracing the unlikely 100-year journey of the photobooth, from its invention by immigrant inventor Anatol Josepho in the 1920s to its near extinction in the digital age, and now its rather extraordinary comeback.

What began as a clever way to make affordable self-portraits became part of popular culture, art, nightlife and everyday life. And somehow, in an age when we can take unlimited photos of ourselves for free, people are lining up again for the opposite experience: squeeze into a little booth, pull the curtain, wait for the flash—and walk away with four real photographs.

There’s a small but passionate community of photobooth collectors, restorers and enthusiasts keeping the machines alive. New York now has its own dedicated photobooth museum, AUTOPHOTO, right here on the Lower East Side.

The film goes in some fascinating directions—photobooths and the democratization of portraiture, their place in art and popular culture, the obsessive people who restore them, and the strange irony of social media helping revive an analog technology it once seemed destined to kill.

A pretty great reminder that sometimes the things we think technology has made obsolete are exactly the things we eventually miss.
