Eleven original paintings worth more than half a million dollars were supposed to make their way from Japan to a gallery in New York. According to a new lawsuit, they made it as far as Hawaii before things went very wrong.

The paintings were travelling from Osaka to New York when they were transferred between aircraft in Honolulu on March 18. The lawsuit claims Alaska Airlines unloaded the artwork during a heavy rainstorm and made “no effort to protect” it from the water.

That was particularly unfortunate considering the paintings were works on paper packed inside cardboard crates. The complaint says all 11 became soaked, leaving more than $521,900 worth of alleged damage.

An insurer has since paid the gallery’s claim and is now suing Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and logistics company Compass Forwarding in an attempt to recover the money. The complaint accuses the airlines of gross neglect and reckless disregard. Alaska Airlines had not responded to The Independent’s request for comment when its story was published.

Transporting valuable artwork by air isn’t unusual, but leaving 11 original paintings exposed during a Hawaiian downpour is certainly not how anyone expected this particular journey to end.

Who do you think should be responsible for the $521,900 bill?

Military families (or any families) should not have to choose cargo for their beloved rabbits. 🐰🇺🇸✈️

When Cookie’s family relocated from Hawaii to Dallas in 2025, rabbits weren’t accepted in-cabin on Alaska or Hawaiian Airlines. Their only option was American Airlines Cargo.

But look at what has changed.

A year later @alaskaair and @hawaiianairlines have now expanded their rabbit in-cabin policy to include travel involving Hawaii — a major change that gives rabbit families more options to keep their pets with them when they fly.

That means a family like Cookie’s would have a very different option today.

If Alaska and Hawaiian can change, American can, too.

Rabbits are companion animals. They deserve the opportunity to travel safely in-cabin with their families—not be treated as cargo simply because they are rabbits and not small dogs or cats.

It’s time for @americanair to recognize that rabbits are pets, not pests.

📣 Call. Email. File a DOT complaint. Ask American to let bunnies fly.
