Knowing a vocabulary word is one thing. Using it to show what you understand is another.

I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe this for a while and I think the closest I can get is it feels like walking a tightrope every single day and choosing to get back on it every morning anyway.

You want to honor the truth of what actually happened because these are real events that happened to real people and they deserve to be taught with honesty and weight. And you want to hold space for every single kid in your room whose family story connects to that history in ways you might not even know about.

You want them to think critically and not just absorb, not just write down what you said and repeat it back. You want them to push on it and question it and connect it to something happening right now. And you want to be brave enough to actually go there with them even when it’s uncomfortable, especially when it’s uncomfortable.

Most days I think we get it right. Some days I drive home and I’m not sure.

But I keep showing up because I genuinely believe that a middle schooler who learns to think about history is going to be a better citizen, a better neighbor, a better human. And that feels worth the tightrope.

Thankful for amazing companies like @brainpop_official and @flocabulary @icivicsinc @archivesfdn @librarycongress @pbs.teachers for always providing amazing resources for us teachers so we can teach history!

We ended the year reflecting on all we learned.
✅Played Claim it!
✅ Watched Flocabulary “Perspectives on Race”
✅ Reviewed the promises of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution: All men/people are created equal and WE the people.
✅ Students made a post-it note pledge, reflecting upon and applying what they learned:
💚I can be a friend to someone who doesn’t look like me…
💚I pledge to help people.
💚I pledge to treat others equally and accept them.
💚I can practice talking to more people and being respectful to be a good citizen in my community.
💚I pledge to never judge anyone and treat everyone with kindness.
💚My pledge is to practice being a citizen by helping those in need.

I first learned about Flocabulary all the way back in high school when a teacher used to play “The Week in Rap” for us! It has been really cool to bring their creations all the way down to my own kindergarten classroom!

I’m always looking for tools to supplement and enhance my everyday instruction.

POV: your first graders are begging for math time because it feels like a concert 🎶✨

We use @flocabulary to introduce and reinforce greater than & less than, and the engagement was unreal. My students weren’t just watching—they were up, moving, dancing, and actually remembering the vocabulary and concepts.

There’s something powerful about pairing music + visuals + movement… it just sticks. 🙌

This year was so awesome! Did a ton of shows & cyphers, wrote for a second orchestra piece, made a year of marriage with my wife, laughed and loved with my friends and made more educational content for the kids 😇

I hope next year I have just as much fun and spread just as much love as I did this year.

2025 for the most part was a pretty good year.
