Grateful to have known the fabulous Weeki Wachee mermaid and Aquabelle, Dianne Wyatt McDonald. We shared some wonderful moments over the years. She was always the star of the show! I met her family at Weeki Wachee today on the park’s 79th anniversary to give her a grand send off beneath the Adagio statue— the famous pose she and Mary Dwight Rose created when they were messing around at Spa Pool in St. Pete. What a lovely human! #mermaid #weekiwachee #ricoubrowning #oldflorida

A look inside Orlando’s 1976 Bicentennial Time Capsule 📰📼 Buried at Lake Eola in 1976, the capsule held newspapers, photos and pieces of our city’s history. Fifty years later, they show just how much we’ve grown and how the past still connects to the Orlando we’re building today.

A BIG day in Orlando history ⛲️ On this date in 1957, more than 170,000 people gathered at Lake Eola to celebrate the dedication of its iconic fountain. In 1965, it was renamed the Linton E. Allen Memorial Fountain, honoring the local banker who first championed the idea of the landmark. 📸: @stevenmadow & @floridamemory

Although the back of the photo says, "Bethune Cookman Day" at Silver Springs, it was more likely Paradise Park. Paradise Park was a tourist attraction and the only local recreational facility "for colored people" about 1 mile from Silver Springs, near Ocala, Florida. It offered similar features, such as glass-bottom boats, "jungle cruises," a petting zoo, a dance pavilion with jukebox, performers, a softball field, a horseshoe toss, and a sandy beach with lifeguards. At the time, it was one of three beaches open for African Americans in the state of Florida. Admission was free, though swimming cost 35¢, which provided a towel and clothes storage. In 1953, Ebony magazine called it "the newest and largest recreational facility for Negroes in the South". It served African American patrons prohibited from Silver Springs' boat rides that were limited to whites only. As was the rule during the "separate but equal period". It operated from 1949 to 1969, closing soon after the desegregation of Silver Springs. On Labor Day, there was a beauty pageant, sponsored by a local American Legion post. The musician B. B. King once visited, as did Mary McLeod Bethune, who "didn't care too much" for Paradise Park "because it was segregated".  There was a Bethune-Cookman College day, with the day's proceeds donated to the college. The following appears in Dr. Bethune's papers from January 1950: "Write a letter to Mr. W. C. Ray, Silver Springs, Florida, thanking him for the $100 and for the concessions given at Paradise Park for Bethune-Cookman College Day." For more reading: Okona, Nneka M. (June 19, 2018). The FAMU Hospital in Tallahassee was the first place in Florida where Black patients could get real medical care. Shauna Smith was born in this hospital in 1954, up on the fourth floor. She started a community called BOTH, Born On The Hill, to find everyone else who was born here and bring them back together. If that’s you, or your parents or grandparents, reach out to: Shauna Smith 850-284-3221 Shaunaysmith@gmail.com, subject line: babies That administration building in the middle of campus, Foote-Hilyer, used to be a hospital. It opened in 1911 as a small sanitarium and grew into something the state had never had before. During segregation, when the white hospitals turned people away, this is where they came. By 1950 it was a full medical center right on campus. The College of Pharmacy opened the next year, then Law, and by 1953 the school became the FAMU we know today. It had a teaching hospital of its own years before Shands ever existed. The building still carries the names of the doctor and nurse who ran it, Leonard Foote and Jennie Hilyer. Part of the reason it was built was to avoid integrating the white hospital across town. So when the Civil Rights Act forced those doors open, the funding followed the patients out, and the hospital quietly closed in 1971. But for decades, this is where generations of North Florida families welcomed their newborns. One of the doctors who started out here was Dr. A.D. Brickler. When the hospital closed, he carried his work across town to Tallahassee Memorial and never stopped, delivering more than thirty thousand of this city’s babies before he retired at ninety.
