Here is an original design Mentawai Hand-tapped tattoo

Ti’ti Gigirat Teitei, this motif represents the bow and arrow, symbolizing the harmony between nature and humans.

Through this journey visiting the indigenous people of Simatalu, I learned the vast complexity of various artforms in their land, from beading to woodwork, one more difficult than the next. How humbling to be amid such people.

The art of tattooing for them represents a form of unity, recognition and deep symbolism, believed to be the sole belonging one takes to the grave.

My journey begins , my end goal is to bring them the support they need. For now here is a snippet of their life and of my first hand tapped tattoo 🙏🏼

This tattoo is called the Ti’ti Gagaik Sarereiket Pattern (from South Siberut)

For a woman tattooing her hands, it represents mainly maturity being ready to take care of herself, the house as a mother and wife. It is also a symbol of protection for the family while the men go out to hunt.

Although the trip was so short, but for me being outside Europe for the first time alone in such a short time span there already happened enough to process🙃 The day session with @durgatattoofamily and being away for a week from Samira was quiet a thing so I was kinda satisfied after the trip. But I definitely wanna go back and see much more of the nature, get to meet more local tattoo artists and I hope to even meet the OG kayan/sarawak tattooed peoples some day 🙏🏼 But than accompanied with my family 💜🌸
