One the greatest gifts of aging is that it allows you gain a clearer perspective on life. We learn to see those around us for who they really are and better understand the value of their presence in our lives. My relationship with my mother has definitely gone through its growing pains (God bless her for making it through the teenage Ashley years) but as time has passed, we've developed a deeper love and appreciation for eachother. We've come to value what makes us unique, as well as the ways in which our strengths and weaknesses can compliment each other's. I have always admired my mother's ability to find joy and beauty in the simple things. She has taught me to find peace and solace in nature's embrace, the magic and satisfaction of growing and nurturing plants, and the pride that comes from creating beauty with my own two hands. But the greatest lesson my mother has taught me is how to love the people around me. She loves fiercely, patiently, and loyally. She continually seeks out the best in the people around her, looking past their faults to find their innate goodness. Everyday, she chooses to see the glass half full. She knows, better than most, that life is a precious gift and should be lived fully and unapologetically. She has taught me, through her example, to be a better person. Happy Birthday to my patient, loyal, creative, hardworking Mom! I love you.
