Akhada or Modern Gym?

There is nothing wrong with a modern gym. But I find myself deeply drawn to the old Vyayama traditions of Bharat.

The Akhada was never just about building muscles. It was about strength, mobility, endurance, discipline, coordination and character—training the body as a whole.

The gada, mudgar, Indian clubs, wrestling, bodyweight movements… each had a purpose and a rhythm.

Perhaps what attracts me is that it feels less like working out and more like practising a way of life.

Not just building a body, but building strength, resilience and awareness—from the outside in and the inside out.

Returning to these old traditions reminds me that sometimes, what we call “new” is simply what we have forgotten. 🙏🏽

Thankyou @satvafit for the beautiful shena pushup board. It feels so easy to be doing the pushups with it💯🙏🏾

Akhada style workout: Dambal Rumali, Baithaks and Gada
(Dambal Rumali also demonstrated with kettlebells aka Rotational Cleans)
🔹Dambal Rumali is a traditional Indian exercise performed with dumbbells by wrestlers to build strength and improve coordination. I was first introduced to this exercise about a decade ago by my friend Tom @waryoga who has trained in numerous Akhada gyms across India over the years.
🔹Baithak (Aka Hindu Squats) are one of my overall favorite bodyweight exercises. I often perform them in high volume sets…they may appear simple but they absolutely roast 🔥 the legs
🔹Gada/Mace is this one of my go to Bamboo Gadas, truly an enjoyable swing. Here I’m swinging the traditional 10&2 technique . It helps build shoulder and grip strength while improving balance, coordination, mobility, and core strength & stability.
I’m a firm believer in the benefits of blending historical with modern training methods
