This work is meant as reactionary with purpose not observational for the sake of bringing up black trauma yet again. This work, I hope, memorializes the lives of so many black lives taken too early from Aiyana Stanley-Jones, 7, to Kathryn Johnston , 92. A key element I grappled with in this series was the place of the noose. I struggled with how can I engage the noose without yet again showing the black body hanged (there’s enough history photos that depict this); I felt the addition of the toy gun is a nod to the death of Tamir Rice, 12, and helps accentuate the idea that lynchings have moved beyond the spectacle of white people going to picnics to watch a hanging, but to the digital age of constantly sharing black deaths over and over and over again. I’ve written a manifesto (link can be found in bio that further explains the work conceptually along with links to playlists I created commemorating just a sliver of the countless lives lost to police brutality and modern lynching).

This body of work is definitely not where I want it to be in terms of telling a cohesive story, but it is a great prototype for me to look back to later when I’m prepared to revisit this idea. Here I’m attempting to depict the door knocker in all its gaudy, chunky, glory. I use the plastic bottle as a means of expressing the grotesque of door knockers by those not within the culture. I run through emotions of deep seeded needs of caressing and nurturing, defeat, and having your own ideals that you created remodeled and shoved back down your throat. There’s a story here. Maybe plastic bottles aren’t the mode of transportation for this narrative, but the story of the door knocker, bamboo earrings, and appropriation of black culture is worth constantly telling and fighting for; its relevance can stop being talked about when Black people are considered just as beautiful in the garb they popularized.

Today’s photos were inspired by @tyrrellwinston work from his show 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘍𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥. His work, specifically his deflated basketball sculptures, looks at the stories that objects he has no personal connection to can tell any number of infinite stories. His exhibition examines ideas of life and death which deeply intrigued me. Using those thoughts as a catalyst for these photos, I thought of the ways in which basketball is such a grounding factor in many communities but especially so in that of African American communities. In my world, basketball played an integral way of connecting with my older brothers and friends a like; with that came a level of masculinity that didn’t allow for and/or count feminity. These photos try to combat that while holding those memories dear and close.

It’s been a while since I’ve taken a photo or even edited a photo so this was super fun for me. I got to make my own little set up which I plan on doing more and more of now that I pretty much only have myself to take photos of. Like my last durag set this is an idea inspired by @johncedmonds typology of the durag. Im trying to explore the idea of feminist and masculinity within hair care. I clearly haven’t found that within these photos but this is a big step forward in exploring the relationship between men and hair care. I wish I had my DSLRs to do this but my phone will do. I’ll be posting way more now!
