Scaligero Castle in Sirmione built in the 13th century is probably the most well conserved castle in Italy. It was built over Roman structures on Garda lake by podesta of Verona. The primary goal was to defend the city and the port. Within some 100 years it was expanded and reinforced. The Republic of Venice seized the castle in the 15th century and turned it into a powerful fortress. Venetians rebuilt a dock, added towers. The castle got 3 main towers with walls fitted with dovetail battlements and a 47m high keep. Once upon a time a boy and a girl stayed in the castle on a stormy night. A stranger asked for a shelter too. He turned out to be a knight. He was so impressed by the girl’s beauty that he could not resist to follow her in her room where he assaulted her. She screamed and the knight killed her. The boy heard her scream, rushed into the room, took out a dagger and killed the knight.
