Keeping Conscientious & Cool On The Poudre...
~
The Poudre is a unique watershed, with cold water stretching from the high country of Rocky Mountain National Park down through the foothills of Fort Collins and beyond. While lower sections can warm during the summer, cooler water is often just a short drive upstream, allowing anglers to adjust and continue fishing responsibly. Early starts are key this time of year. We will continue monitoring conditions throughout the canyon and keep you updated as things change.Check out the last 3 shots for a current update as of 8/7 up in the Poudre River Canyon.
~
August Walk Wade Special: Book any guided trip in August and use code “AUG50” online, or mention it when booking by phone at (970)498-8968 for $50 OFF Walk Wade Trips on the Poudre or in Rocky Mountain National Park. With earlier start times and guides on the water every day, we’re able to stay ahead of changing conditions, find the best fishing available, and help ensure the health of our beloved Poudre. The fishing has been excellent, and we’d love to help you experience it while staying cool and fishing responsibly. #stpetesflyshop #weareguestsonthisriver #poudreriverupdate #summerfishing #fishingreport

Long, hot summer days are here to stay in Northern Colorado, which means one thing for anglers: ethical fishing.
~
You’ve probably noticed voluntary closures popping up across the state, and we’ve been getting plenty of questions about what that means for the Poudre. While we’re incredibly thankful to call it our home water, protecting it is all of our responsibility.
~
Here are five simple ways to fish more ethically this summer:
• Carry a thermometer and monitor water temperatures throughout the day.
• Fish heavier 3X to 4X tippet to land fish quickly.
• Use a net and keep fish in oxygen rich water.
• Keep fish wet and release them as quickly as possible.
• Consider fishing a single, ideally barbless, dry fly to reduce handling.
~
The biggest takeaway is simple: carry a thermometer. Use caution when water temperatures reach 65° to 67°, and stop targeting trout once they hit 68° or higher.
~
Thankfully, the Poudre has several advantages, including cold reservoir releases, fast moving water, and higher elevation that help keep temperatures lower than many other Colorado rivers. Even so, conditions can change throughout the day, so monitor temperatures, make good decisions, and help us protect the fishery we all love.

With high water rolling through the Front Range, our float guides took the opportunity to level up their skills.
~
They completed an ACA Swiftwater Rescue certification course—adding another crucial layer of preparedness to every trip we guide. These techniques are designed for exactly the kind of fast-changing conditions that can arise on the river, and we’re proud to have a team that trains for the unexpected.
~
Alongside CPR and First Aid certifications, swiftwater rescue forms the foundation of safety we believe every guide should bring to the water—especially as we head into Wilderness Float season.
~
Need to gear up for your next float? Swing by the South Shop Boat Room—we’ve got quality gear from @nrsfishing, @outcastsportinggear, and more!
~
Interested in taking a swiftwater course yourself? We’re happy to connect you with trusted local resources. The more trained boaters on the water, the safer it is for everyone.Stay safe, float smart, and we’ll see you on the water. #stpetesflyshop #weareguestsonthisriver #swiftwaterrescue #ACA #swiftwatercertified #wildernessfloatguides #floattrips #flyfishingoutfitter #guidedtrips #safteyfirst #riverrunners #summerfloatseason #prepared #summerprep
