The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum is the only museum dedicated to United States Marine Corps aviation. Opening 2028 at the Great Park in Irvine.

I extend my heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to Retired Brigadier General Mike Aguilar, President and CEO of the Flying Leatherneck Historical Foundation, on achieving a remarkable milestone for the City of Irvine and our nation: the topping-out ceremony for the new Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum at the Great Park. With the structural framework now complete, we are one step closer to opening the world’s only museum dedicated to Marine Corps aviation. Slated to open in 2028, this state-of-the-art facility will honor the bravery and sacrifice of Marine aviators and tell their story — from the earliest days of flight to modern operations — through historic aircraft, rare artifacts, hands-on STEM educational spaces, and interactive exhibits. Thank you to BGen Aguilar, the Foundation Board, our veterans, generous donors, and the Snyder Langston construction team for helping build a lasting civic legacy for generations to come. This week, history reached new heights at the Great Park in Irvine. At the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, we placed the final and highest beam atop the new Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum, marking a major milestone in bringing this extraordinary museum to life. It was an honor to sign the beam and represent Irvine’s city leadership alongside my friend, USMC Brigadier General Michael Aguilar, museum board members, donors, and dedicated Marines who served at this base. The structure is rising, and we’re one step closer to opening the doors. We can’t wait to welcome our community and visitors to a museum that will honor Marine aviation and the men and women who served right here in our city. A proud day for Irvine. A lasting tribute to the Marines. Semper Fidelis. 🇺🇸 #usmc #marines #irvine #military #history @flyingleathernecks

BookDevils, (Before the night ends) Seven years ago today, on October 9, 2019, the Marine Corps and literary world lost one of their own. Samuel Hynes was more than a decorated Marine aviator. He was a writer who understood that the experiences of war deserved to be remembered, not merely recorded. Today, on the anniversary of his passing, we honor the warrior, the writer, and the words he left behind. A special thank you to @Windshield6 for bringing Samuel Hynes back to our attention and reminding us of the importance of preserving the stories of Marines who came before us. Farewell, Marine. We’ll ensure that your words live on. #SamuelHynes #TheWarriorAndTheWriter #MarineAuthors #WarLiterature #MarineAviation

An epic homecoming for the Devils yesterday, following a year-long deployment to Japan. It was an emotional tribute to a job well done—and one hell of a mission accomplished. “First to Fight, Last to Leave.” #reddevils #vmfa232reddevils #mcasmiramar #vmfa232 #flymarines

✈️ Preserving aviation history, one project at a time. We recently welcomed the Leatherneck Aviation Museum students to Flabob Airport for a 2-day Poly-Fiber Fabric Covering Workshop! Our instructors had the opportunity to train the students in the fundamentals of the Poly-Fiber System as they prepare to restore their Curtiss JN "Jenny" one of aviation's most iconic historic aircraft. We're honored to help preserve these timeless airplanes by sharing the skills and techniques that keep them flying for future generations. Thank you to the Leatherneck Aviation Museum for spending the weekend with us. We can't wait to see the Curtiss JN Jenny restoration come to life! Title: “The Good Will Son” Author: Lieutenant Colonel David S. Libbey @dslibbey49 Unit(s): -VT-2 -VT-3 -HT-8 -HT-18 -HMM-265 -HMX-1 -MAWTS-1 -HMT-302 “The Good Will Son” is the kind of memoir that reminds you a life doesn’t follow a straight path. David Libbey takes readers from a difficult childhood in Maine to the battlefields of Vietnam, the cockpit of Marine helicopters, and ultimately the flight deck of Marine One. Told through forty-four interconnected stories, that shaped the man behind the uniform. Libbey doesn’t shy away from the lasting effects of war, family trauma, or personal loss, but he never lets those moments define the entire story. Alongside the heartbreak are stories of humor, mentorship, and adventure. His reflections on Vietnam, leadership, and the Marines feel earned because they come from someone who lived them, not someone looking to glorify them. For Marines, there’s a lot to appreciate here. Libbey offers an inside look at earning his wings, flying the CH-53, serving with HMX-1, transporting President Ronald Reagan aboard Marine One, and eventually commanding a helicopter training squadron. Just as memorable are his thoughts on leadership, taking care of Marines, and recognizing that the greatest measure of success is bringing your people home safely. “The Good Will Son” is ultimately a story about resilience. It shows how adversity can shape character without hardening the heart, and how service is about far more than medals or rank. Whether you’re a Marine, veteran, aviator, or simply enjoy memoirs grounded in authenticity, this is a thoughtful and deeply human read that proves even the most unlikely beginnings can lead to an extraordinary life. #TheGoodWillSon #DavidLibbey #MarineAviation #MarineOne #StackBooksLikeYouStackBodies

I never served in uniform. Serving on the board of the @flyingleathernecks is one small way I try to honor the men and women who did. This month brought news I’ve been waiting more than three years to share: after years of negotiations, definitive agreements, and signatures, we’ve broken ground at The Great Park in Irvine - on the same soil where Marine aviators launched from MCAS El Toro for over 50 years. When it opens, it will be the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to Marine Corps aviation. More than 50 historic aircraft. The stories of the Marines who flew them. A hands-on learning hub for students across Orange County. What I’m most excited about is simple: walking my three kids through those doors and helping them understand, in a tangible way, the legacy of the Marines, the aircraft they flew, and the country they defended. The museum generously spotlighted me in this month’s newsletter - thank you. But the real heroes are the museum’s staff, volunteers, and donors making this happen, and my colleagues at Grant, Genovese & Baratta, LLP, whose excellence and support make this kind of long-horizon service possible. The spotlight has my name on it; a lot of people earned it. (A fun footnote: the #usmnt🇺🇸⚽️ is training for the #worldcup2026⚽️ just steps from the construction site. This ground has always been where people prepare for moments that matter.) If you’d like to be part of it, the link to the FLAM’s newsletter is in my profile and it also provides information for founding membership to the museum and aircraft sponsorship. Semper Fi to those who served. 🇺🇸 #semperfi #marinecorps #usmc Ironworkers tie rebar grids for the foundation of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum at the Great Park in Irvine with the construction equipment and mountains in the background.

We toured the construction site of the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum to learn about the exciting progress toward its opening in early 2028. Once open, residents will have the opportunity to explore interactive exhibits, including an Air Traffic Control & Flight Simulator and immersive AR experiences that bring aviation history to life. #FLAM #FlyingLeathernecks #CouncilmemberMelindaLiu #Irvine
