The best Batman story I’ve read. When Bruce Wayne discovers an old bat costume of his father’s he discovers he may not be the first costumed vigilante of the family.

At an old masquerade ball gangsters held the place up looking for a doctor to save their dying mob boss. Thomas Wayne, clad in a bat costume, was chosen to help the mob boss, Lew Moxon.

Realizing he’d probably get killed after saving Moxon Thomas stages a fight and escapes. Only Moxon swears vengeance and puts the Wayne family on the course for tragedy.

In modern day Bruce swears to bring Moxon to justice. The twist, these Silver Age stories often had twists, is that Bruce wears his dad’s masquerade costume when his own is tattered. Moxon freaks at the sight and seals his own fate.

Written by the greatest Batman writer of them all, Bill Finger.

Will Eisner’s The Spirit, probably the comic that first gave me the feeling I was elevating my love of comics when I started picking up the Warren & Kitchen Sink magazines ten years ago. Whenever I want to feel like a deeper comics scholar I jump back into Eisner’s work, I find something new each time. How does he do that?

This beautiful Artisan Edition features scans of surviving original art, the ink work on these characters whether it’s their hands or faces, it’s so dynamic it leaps off the page. For stories that are often only seven pages I find these comics coming to life and playing before me as if it were live-action.

Many have tried to replicate the spirit of The Spirit (and only Alan Moore and Rick Veitch have come close) but most efforts I don’t find as close to good as these stories.

Even calling it the “Citizen Kane of comics” feels somehow beneath it, but it’s a charming sentiment nevertheless.

Doug Wildey’s masterwork ‘Rio’ shot from its beautiful original art. One of IDW’s finest books edited lovingly by Scott Dunbier. Wildey is one of my favorite artists and this original art edition is as special as his work deserves.

Hands down one of the most beautiful books in my collection and the cowboy theme makes it all the better.
