Hidden Disabilities Week 🌻🌻Finding Light in Change...

In 2019, my FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) diagnosis brought unexpected changes and a very different path from the one I had imagined. It was a time filled with uncertainty, adjustment, and learning to understand a new version of life.

Leaving the veterinary profession was another significant part of that change, and it took time to find my way forward.

Over time, I chose to channel that change into creativity and cake artistry. What began as a way through a difficult time became My Beespoke Bakehouse, a business that lets me express myself, create meaningful pieces, and find purpose in a new chapter.

Living with a hidden disability isn’t always easy. Much of what people experience remains unseen, even behind a smile or finished cake. There are challenges, limitations, and difficult days that others may never see.

This Hidden Disabilities Week, I want to remind others that a diagnosis may change your path, but it doesn’t have to take away your purpose, creativity or hope.

Be kind, be patient, and remember that you never truly know what someone else is navigating 🌻

Feeling proud of myself for going and grateful to Kerryn @fndwellbeing for sending me a link a couple of weeks ago to a seminar she was doing. She followed it up by sending me a link to a weekly group for people with FND called Wellness Wednesdays (who doesn’t love a bit of alliteration) where today a topic was given. Disassociation, symptoms, tools, grounding and after a brief explanation covering symptoms you may not have fitted under that heading, there was a chance to ask questions, learn from eachother and connect. I wanted to say a big thank you to myself for going 😉 @fndwellbeing for messaging me and facilitating it and everyone who was there. I came away with a little visual nugget that will hopefully help me during my next consultation so a big 🙌🏼 all round! #fndawareness #fndaction #fndhope #functionalneurologicaldisorder #littlegems

Sat in the waiting room pending a giant needle in my tummy…. When a lady leaned towards me and said “what’s that injection, is it the weight loss one”….. my ovaries must be twitchy in anticipation coz I loved my reply!! And then I thought -

A) No it’s not. So what if it is. It’s none if your business.

B) I wish I said “I’ve got 8 more years of this, and it’s my preventative treatment to stop my breast cancer coming back MOTHER F*CKER”!!

C) the time the lady is Tesco said, “how far gone are you?” and I said “I’m swollen from bowel cancer surgery”.

Only a hand full of people have truly seen the effects of cancer on me, my self preservation is to only show people the good days (right or wrongly so) and this October cancer is weighing heavily on me.

This morning was a reminder that not all disabilities are visible. Be kind. Never assume.

Now I have a FND headache 🖕🏻

From being a community nurse, providing the care, ordering the equipment to help support every day tasks, sending the referrals to being on the receiving end was very strange to say the least … and very hard to accept … I still struggle to take help now! Acceptance is the hardest part for me that this is now a new me!!

This is me taking a few steps with my knee braces on. ❤️

It’s honestly so annoying and aggravating not being able to just get up and walk when I want to. Something so many people can do without even thinking about it, it can feel like such a huge achievement for me. Some days are harder than others, and it can be really frustrating watching my body struggle with something I desperately want to do.

But I’m not giving up. These few steps might not seem like much to some people, but to me, they mean everything. They’re proof that I’m still trying, still pushing forward, and still believing in myself. One step at a time.

Thankyou @fndwellbeing for your Webinar on Sunday night. I’m glad I gave myself the gift of coming and listening despite my default setting being an ‘I know that’ being someone who research’s the ins and out of a cats arse when you’re left alone to tackle a variety of conditions but it really helped with my internal dialogue and tuning back in with conscious awareness to my mind/ body / fatigue connection and stop the never ending self berating loop! I’m looking forward to taking the plunge and coming to Wellness Weds and meeting other people who share common ground and a common goal. Anyone with #functionalneurologicaldisorder should take a look at their page and the website for what’s available. Lots of free resources and some paid.
