The Aravis, off road

From Ugine in the French Alps to the col des aravis, via the route de la soif, one of those gravel rides that feels like a proper alpine gravel route.

the route winds its way through quiet mountain roads and open alpine pastures, with a long rugged gravel section in the middle. rough, sometimes loose and a little technical on the downhill, so i’d definitely recommend 40mm+ tyres and some confidence when things get steeper. The reward is a spectacular belvedere over mont blanc, especially early in the morning when the first light hits the massif from the east. definitely worth getting up early for. Plenty of spots to refill water bottles.

And if you have more time (and legs), the ride can be extended into a bigger loop around the back of Mont Charvin, before climbing back towards Manigod and la Croix Fry.

High mountains, rough gravel, big views. exactly what alpine gravel should feel like.
