Pre-production for Illadelph Dreams: R U A Robot? began in 2023 with a test shoot @rair_philly We sourced the ever-flowing waste stream for objects big and small for set design. The towering trash heaps served as a ready-made apocalyptic backdrop that gave the Illadelph story world eerie authenticity.

The secret sauce of this glorified guerilla production was the inclusive community of creatives that operated with a true spirit of collaboration making space for everyone to teach and learn from each other throughout the process.

I have to give a special shout-out to the amazing Professor @maslidukan who was the cornerstone of this crew from the early test-shoot last year and came through in the clutch with her stellar team of students from CCP to film this summer. I couldn’t have chosen a better DP to show me the ropes on set.

As a first-time filmmaker, clarity and patience are priceless when learning the language and skill sets of cinematography and all that comes with leading a crew to execute a vision that lives in your head. I’m deeply grateful for all I learned from Asli and to everyone who showed up and held me down on this project so close to my heart.

R U A Robot? Is a part of Illadelph Dreams 2045 — an immersive theater experience that illuminates the apocalyptic reality of Philly residents in the face of environmental crises and planetary threats imagined through the lens of the speculative future.

The story blurs the lines of history and fiction, time and space, human and AI in a quest to understand where the human race is headed and how we can survive the shadows of our own endangered species.
