One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish
- Dr. Seuss
Madeira has no shortage of fish to photograph! I was impressed by the biodiversity of fish life and large schools.

A Total Wreck of a Weekend: The Corveta Afonso Cerqueira is an 85-meter-long former naval ship of the Portuguese Navy that was intentionally sunk off the coast of Madeira in 2018.The ship now serves as an artificial reef with the top of the bridge at 15 meters and the bottom at 30 meters. Commissioned on June 28, 1975, the 1,380-ton corvette, her primary duties included surveillance, search and rescue operations, and participating in national and international training exercises with other naval forces.

When we started down the anchor line, we could not see the ship until halfway down when we could make out the massive size and superstructure. When you see a new wreck for the first time, there is an overwhelming moment of aw and excitement of where to start. We started at the bow (and spent too much time there) and worked our way back to the stern and mid-section smoke stack where the anchor line.

The order in which your World Cup boat dives each site is randomly drawn and it ended up being our last dive of the week. It was also the coldest dive registering bottom temperatures of 65 degrees F and we had an overcast drizzly day. After 8 dives over 4 days, the water temperature felt even chillier in my 5 mil and Manomi’s 8 mil and multiple layers. This was the first dive that we actually had to call (signaled by crossing your arms in a “X” symbol) after a 45 minutes because of the cold and shivering. A low body core temperature along with the depth is a contributing factor to decompression sickness, so no photo is worth that risk.

Although it has been underwater for 8 years, surprisingly, it does not have a lot of growth or marine life, but the structure itself is amazing to explore and photograph. I wish we were able to dive this wreck before the competition and plan out some shots and also dive it afterwards just for fun and to explore more. Endless possibilities and stories to tell to be left untold until our visit to Madeira.

Garajau Marine Protected Area (MPA) located south of Madeira Island is home to the famous large dusky groupers that the local divers know by name. These groupers can weigh over 50 kg (110 pounds) and measure up to 1.5 m (5’) in length. Comfortable with divers, and probably realizing they are safe in the MPA, they will approach divers very closely and interact like puppies. They are the stars of the Garajau MPA!

Some achievements represent far more than a medal.

Winning the 3rd place in the Video Documentary category at the CMAS World Championship of Underwater Photography and Video is the result of countless hours underwater, dedication, creativity, and a deep passion for the ocean.

It is also an opportunity to showcase to the world one of Madeira’s greatest treasures: its extraordinary underwater world. Every image tells a story, and every dive is a reminder of how privileged we are to explore these waters.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. We will continue to dive, explore, and share the magic beneath the surface.

🌊💙
