I wove my tapestry ‘Not Me’ during a seven month trip to my studio in the Indian Himalayas. It wasn’t the longest trip I’d made and it gave me time to weave the two large tapestries which made up this piece but on reflection I had less time for dyeing. I returned to England with the two tapestries in my suitcases and a mental note to weave the larger works in London and save my trips to the Himalayas for natural dyeing, weaving smaller pieces and sampling for larger textiles. In the language of Vedanta ‘Not Me’ or Naa-Ham suggests that I am the creator but nature the enabler and within this, one lets go of ownership, ego and identity. Wonderful intentions. During this trip I moved permanently into my studio and my bedroom is adjacent to my weaving studio and includes a small basic kitchen and bathroom. I installed a fridge, gas hob, immersion heater, western loo and fixed the electrics. It is basic but fine. My shower is a bucket, jug and tepid water and I sorely miss an oven which I could buy but haven’t. Throughout the trip where I arrived in spring and managed fine through summer and monsoon, autumn and early winter, JankiJi, Vibhuti and Garima helped with processing the wool that I had dyed and kept me company. Vibhuti took the photos of me here. Represented by @sarahmyerscoughgallery ‘Not Me’ was shown @fogfair and @eyeofthecollectorlondon and in a group show @sarahmyerscoughgallery before being sold to a collector and it lives now in grand, minimal splendour in Gstaad, Switzerland. #tapestries #naturaldyeing#himalayas#@sarahmyerscoughgallery#teresahastings
