𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝟏𝟎𝟏

Join artist and co-founder of @folaakl, @nishamadhan, for an online introduction to contemporary live art and performance art practice. Drawing on her own work as well as the work of those who inspire her, Nisha will guide you through a range of ideas that underpin this work and how you might unravel those ideas yourself. Whether you’re an artist working in another medium or simply intrigued by the form, this session will offer a generous entry point into making and thinking about live art.

In this online workshop, creative producer @sumses will walk you through the basics of building a budget for your creative project — from mapping your costs and setting realistic fees to ensuring that what you put together holds up in a funding application. Whether you’re applying for your first grant or want to feel more confident with the numbers behind your practice, you’ll leave with a clear, practical framework you can use straight away.

In these in-person sessions, you are invited to join a quiet co-working space where you will work on your application alongside other artists applying for the fund. This is a chance to spend dedicated time on your application with support from our Advisors @zhao.jingcheng and @marcconaco. You will not be expected to share your work with others.

As part of the 2025 Asian Artist's Fund, artist Min Kyoung Lee has undertaken a four week residency at @artspace.aotearoa 's the Kit, under the Parallax: programme and with curatorial and dramaturgical support from F.O.L.A (AKL).⁠
⁠
After more than a decade of voyage across Europe and Korea, Min returned to Aotearoa in 2023 to re-root her artistic practice in the place where it first took shape. During this residency, drawing on early Buddhist ideas of suffering, she began exploring different performance materials, words, images, movements, body and postures. Over the four weeks she has initiated workshops and rehearsals with collaborators.⁠

@artspace.aotearoa is pleased to announce Min Kyoung Lee as the Asian Artists' Fund performance artist in residence, hosted as part of the Parallax: programme curated by curatorial intern Jingcheng Zhao.⁠

Min Kyoung Lee is an artist working across dance, performance, installation, video and writing. Her practice navigates the space between art and real life, investigating the performer’s inner experience and questioning the assumed contracts between artist and audience. During her residency, she will develop work inspired by early Buddhist thought, bringing ancient insights on existence into dialogue with contemporary society.⁠

Congratulations to all the artists who received funding. The full list of funded artists and projects is now on our website.

We received 119 applications this year, the highest since the fund’s creation in 2022. The total amount requested was $3.2 million, which is a lot more than the $650k we had available to distribute to artists. Ultimately, we were only able to fund 26 applications, and there were many more artists and projects that our independent panel of practitioners would have supported if they had been able to.

This is the first year Satellites has been a partner on this fund, and it has been a privilege to lead the design of the funding streams, as well as support with marketing and outreach. We are grateful to @foundationnorth and @creativenz for initiating the fund in response to the underrepresentation of Asian artists within arts funding, and to @aklcouncil for joining as one of the co-investors this year.

The demand we have seen, and the calibre of applications, show us that there’s a need for increased investment — not just in Aotearoa Asian arts, but in our cultural sector as a whole — and this is what we will be fighting for in future iterations of the fund.

F.O.L.A @folaakl was founded by the theatre duo Nisha Madhan and Julia Croft, who have been working together for over 10 years, F.O.L.A. is a celebration of live art, as resistance, joy, and cultural deviance. From bullet-casting rituals to DIY rain walks, it is a place where artists from across the Pacific come to play, provoke, and push boundaries.

Our last piece for F.O.L.A 2025 couldn’t be anything else than Kaan Hiini’s post show text highlights of ‘Glory Whole’.

“A Les Mills group fitness class as dungeon opera rave, art directed by Ryan Murphy in peak American Horror Story mode. Perfectly chaotic in its pursuit of perfection(?), morphing and morphing, until skin dripped from faces, strobes of sweat swung into water torture and gains gained the grade of holy grail. As missiles fall, timeless techno treadmills turnt us out.”
