“The Fondation Etrillard grant played an essential role in my research, enabling me to undertake the travel necessary to access archival collections dispersed across France and abroad.” — Clara Lespessailles, recipient of the first “Arts of the Past / Arts of the Present” Doctoral Research Grant awarded by the Fondation Etrillard

From 2021 to 2024, Clara Lespessailles devoted her PhD research to “Primitivisms among Ingres’s students, between 1830 and 1870” at the École du Louvre and the École Pratique des Hautes Études. Her research explores how Ingres’s students engaged with and reinterpreted earlier art through the study of artworks, archives and artists’ correspondence.

With the support of the Fondation Etrillard, through the École du Louvre Endowment Fund, she was able to conduct research in direct contact with primary sources in France and abroad, notably in Rome, Florence, Munich, Bern and Neuchâtel.
