[…the palace that walked…]

In Naples, there is a palace that, in the 19th century… walked.

The Gaetano Filangieri Civic Museum is one of those Neapolitan museums where the building itself is almost as fascinating as the collection it houses.

It is located inside Palazzo Como, at 288 Via Duomo, a 15th-century building and a rare, beautiful example of Renaissance architecture in Naples.

But why is it called “the palace that walked”?

In 1880, during the redevelopment and widening of Via Duomo, Palazzo Como stood in the way of the new street layout. Rather than demolishing it, its façade was dismantled and rebuilt about twenty metres further back.

And that’s how it earned its incredible popular nickname.

Founded in 1882 by Gaetano Filangieri, Prince of Satriano, the museum houses a collection of paintings, sculptures, weapons, ceramics, porcelain, decorative arts, Oriental objects and books.

Filangieri did much more than donate his collection: he personally financed the building’s conversion into a museum and designed much of its interior.

He designed the spiral staircase, stained-glass windows, carved details and wrought-iron work. In the Sala Agata, he even introduced surprisingly modern museum features, including a large skylight that provides diffused light from above and a gallery offering an elevated view of the room.

In short, a museum to visit. A palace to observe.
