In a surprise move, I ended up at Family Cafe for lunch today with Judith and Jason, who I finally met IRL after months of knowing each other online. We were going to go to Salami Mammi but they are closed right now.

We had the Fava Bean Dish served over bread, and Lamb Dish served with rice. Both were excellent and their housemade hot sauce was spicy and tangy - wonderful flavor. We also had one of their pastries - it was filled with spinach, mushroom, and sumac, accompanied by a sweet and savory sauce. The milk tea - black tea with cardamom + warm milk - was very comforting. It came with a handful of sugar cubes and some walnuts.

I loved the food and I look forward to eating there again. This place is a gem. #beaverton #familycafe #beavertoneats #rice

Earlier this week we (Judith and myself) attended a media dinner for the new evening service of Gabby’s Next Door. They’ve been doing lunch for a while, and now it’s time for dinner. You’ll be able to come here specifically for Gabby’s, and it will also be an option while waiting for your table next door at Gabbiano’s.

Everything was served family style. The bagna cauda with potato chips was already on the table and very - VERY - easy to eat. It’s creamy, a little tangy, with a bit of umami from the anchovies. The charred brassicas had great texture - fork tender - but I tend to like my brassicas even more charred than these were. They came atop a lovely roasted carrot puree that lent a nice sweetness to things. Loved the pickled chili that added some brightness to the mix.

Many who know me know of my 👀 about shrimp (but not bay shrimp); it’s a textural thing. I do try it when given to me and I was happy to find that this shrimp in the Fra Diavolo was more tender than I usually encounter. For me, though, the sauce was the star. Savory with a little kick, so good with the bread. The potatoes were also good but I would have liked a bit more shallot aioli. Texture was excellent.

Two larger dishes were vegetarian manicotti and sausages with beans. Really hard to not want to eat the whole gratin of manicotti, ngl - loved the balance of pasta, filling, and sauce. But even better than that were the beans in the sausage dish. They were my favorite thing I ate all night. So frickin’ good! I would like a whole bowl of these beans plz.

Had a couple of Italian sodas - pineapple and orange vanilla. Would love to see more NA options; next time I’ll check the case more closely (user error on my part).

Thus dinner service will be another great addition to this fantastic food nexus that is Foxchase Addition. Service launches this fall (date TBD).

Judith and I were able to attend the Summer Supper event by Urban Gleaners on Sunday. This marks UG’s 20th anniversary, too. Summer Supper helps raise funds to reduce food waste and hunger. Lots of great restaurants participating this year. I was particularly impressed with the offerings from Pizza Thief, Bar Nouveau, Sebastiano’s, and Sugarpine Drive-In, but the tastes were all high quality.

Great to see colleagues and other friendly faces. Plus, goats! #portland #urbangleaners #summersupper #bridgetownbites

Had a great meal at Tartuca with Judith - it’s been on my list for ages and I’m glad to have finally made it in. We had olives, the farinata, confit new potatoes, and gnudi. I also had the a nice mocktail with Roots aperitif, grapefruit, and tonic. And we talked about plans for Salad Week next year! It was also a good night for a postprandial walk. #tartuca #pdxeats #bridgetownbites

We headed to Vancouver to try out some salads for Portland Salad Week. It was fun to try a variety of things, and at one spot the chef came over and shared some of his favorite spots for salad in town. See where we went and what we tried. Spoiler: I still think about the salad rolls we had.

It’s that time again: Portland Salad Week is here! Salads are a summer joy, and while lettuce has been in the national spotlight lately (with Oregon being at a low risk level), salad is way more than that. It’s tomatoes, tea leaves, arugula, tofu, cabbage, seafood, grains, nuts, cheese, meats, fruit, noodles, flowers and more.

A number of restaurants are participating with special salads for Portland Salad Week, and ingredients run the gamut. So check it out and I hope you will enjoy Oregon’s seasonal bounty in the form of a salad.

The other night we were invited to try some dishes at Alma, a Balkan restaurant on NE MLK near Killingsworth. They have a new way of organizing your eating experience: For $55 you get to eat anything on the menu for two hours. A few things have an additional cost but they are in the minority. Note: this meal was comped.

We started with a few dips: Baba Ghanoush, Tarator (a dilly yogurt), and Ezme (“Ottoman pico de gallo”). It came with warm grilled bread. All very tasty, though the baba ghanoush needed a little time to warm up to experience its full, lovely flavor.

I had a raspberry shrub that was very refreshing and fruity; vinegar was minimal. Judith had a white wine she liked.

We really loved the ćevapi. They were tender and juicy with a nice flavor of the grill. Kamjak and onions were on point but I missed the ajvar. But I could eat multiple servings of those glorious little sausages. This is one not to miss on the menu.

The Roasted Cauliflower with yogurt, cilantro dressing, mint, pickled fefferoni (pickled peppers) came recommended by our server and it was a great choice. I love the taste of roasted cauliflower - kind of sweet and nutty - and the yogurt, herbs, and peppers were a great match.

The people next to us had fries and they smelled so good we also got some. Terrific! Crispy on the outside and soft inside, not a soggy or oily one in the bunch.

Here are other dishes we tried:
-Shepherds Salata
-Chicken kabab with red pepper puree and pistachio crumble
-Tomato Dolma with poached Oregon albacore, capers, and toum yogurt
-Vegeta Wings, keffir marinated with hot sauce

Baklava ended the meal. Not overly soaked or dry, it was in the middle as far as its involvement with syrup. It was a nice end to the meal.

Many thanks to the folks at Alma for having us!

Today ended up being a day of delicious things. No pic of the almond croissant latte at Maggie’s Coffee but I can assure you it was great. After that I picked up the seasonal salad at Fresh Love, which had romaine, arugula, pickled celery, nuts, Parmesan, and a lemon poppyseed dressing; I added turkey and 🥑. Also picked up a bag of Gold Fork Baking Co English muffins at Fresh Love that I look forward to trying. Will put my homemade raspberry jam on them!

I met up with Judith at the OEN Jupiter Marketplace. Saw Chris from Garliki and tried their new chimichurri flavor that blew me away, so I had to buy a jar. I’m a big fan of their product: fermented garlic, an elevated jarlic that is so excellent. Mahsa Chai was there and tried their iced chai drink that hit the spot on a warm afternoon. Barely sweet and so creamy. I also enjoyed some hot sauces by Hych - the pineapple flavor was great!

Then we stopped in at Hey Love next door to relax and cool down. I had the pleasure of meeting Sophie Thomson there, who co-founded this sweet bar. Loved all the plants and the vibe. The Sassy Tami with flavors of ginger, tamarind, and sasparilla lemonade was spicy and sweet. It went great with the al pastor skewer. Judith ordered a little machete with chicken tinga that was fab. That red sauce had some lingering kick to it.

I later met some colleagues at Bar Loon. Had a couple of mocktails and a plate of burrata with tomatoes. Great conversation, too! I love the staff there. The red light in the bathroom makes me think of Twin Peaks. #portland #pdxeats #eatyourcitypdx #bridgetownbites

I have to say, it was a pretty nice, tasty weekend. It started Friday with two iced teas at Smith Teamaker - mint green and a welcome back to their Blackberry Lavender. Each glass of iced tea was just a buck; truly a deal. And so tasty.

I was able to check out the Hollywood Q food hall and got a nice plate of Döner kebab from Shiki Shiki Baba. It hit the spot, plus we got to sit in our old booth when the place was Columbia River Brewing many years ago.

Saturday morning we stopped in at Mayger Coffee and had a homemade cardamom scone, a latte and cortado, plus I tried their Salmiakki latte, made with a licorice syrup and dusted with salt. I was not sure if I’d like it but gave it a shot. I loved it!!

While running an errand I randomly came across this sweet little farm stand of sorts from Oakspur Farm and Flowers in Cully. I hope to return when I have more time.

On Sunday I headed to Sunday Parkways in Multnomah Village, and Judith and I came across Sidewalk Soda Co, which made these beautiful Italian cream sodas. Mine was blackberry and Judith’s was piña colada. We absolutely loved them!

We stopped in at Level Beer for a task and ended up getting three excellent little pupusas from Salvi PDX. Great texture, delicious fillings, and a tangy curtido to balance everything out. On the way to the car I snapped this photo of the Down to Earth cafe as a reminder that I want to check them out later.

I wanted to stop by and look at a building on my mind in the Kerns neighborhood and we stopped in at Laurelthirst for a drink. I had the Pilgrim’s Punch mocktail that was both fruity and a little bitter. I loved it. Also had half a BLT and some fries. Great laid back atmosphere in there.

Not pictured: treats from FIKA, including a savory bun that was excellent, but I ate it before I could get a pic.

It was a fun food weekend. I love you, Portland. 💕#pdxeats #portland #eatyourcitypdx #bridgetownbites

Judith sat down to chat with Joe Futschik about his cottage bakery business, FIKA. We’ve loved his pastries and baked goods for a while, and enjoyed hearing about his start in sweets/savories and what the future holds for his baking business.
