[Every Wednesday] Mercury brings something special ✨

Before dream pop learned to float, @for.against gave it a pulse.

"December" sits in that beautiful fault line between post-punk, jangle pop, dream pop and coldwave, where shimmering guitars never quite conceal the loneliness underneath. The production is deceptively rich: chorus-soaked guitars, restless bass, precise drums and vocals that sound young enough to still believe, and hurt enough to know better.

It’s easy to hear the DNA later absorbed by shoegaze and indie rock, but For Against had something many descendants lost: emotional weight.

Romantic, alienated, quietly devastating. Some records don’t age. They haunt.

Worth your attention if you're curious about discovering some underrated bands from the Great Plains region.

A year ago today we released Piqued, the last album from For Against chief songwriter, lead singer, bass player and only constant member Jeffrey Runnings ❤️

A posthumous release that’s also a celebration of the artist’s lifelong quest for a sound that, stripped to the bones, is all the more powerful and cathartic for its restraint, Piqued was recorded by Runnings at home on an old 8-track cassette machine. It plays just like a late 80s mixtape, lovingly compiled to showcase the beautiful emptiness of post-punk’s more eloquently quiet peaks. The favourites of a lifetime - from Section 25 to The Comsat Angels, from Young Marble Giants to early 4AD singles - are conjured as Runnings’ final songs play. Stark and deadpan on the surface, this is electric guitar music in its most human and vulnerable form.

Of For Against, Pitchfork’s Ned Raggett once wrote: “They deserve recognition for their early-adapter approach to post-punk, as well as for sticking with it until and after everyone finally came around”

Out now on IPR, Piqued is For Against lynchpin Jeffrey Runnings’ final collection of songs. A posthumous release but also a celebration of an artist’s lifelong quest for a sound that, stripped to the bones, is all the more powerful and cathartic for its restraint.

OUT NOW: Jeffrey Runnings, Piqued.

Some forty years after a fan letter from Nebraska resulted in Independent Project Records commencing a decades-long collaboration with post-punk cult favourites turned dream pop visionaries For Against, the label proudly presents Piqued, the last album from For Against chief songwriter, lead singer, bass player and only constant member Jeffrey Runnings.
Piqued is available on vinyl (black or transparent magenta), Special Edition CD and digital, and comes with a 4-track EP of rare recordings from the late 80s, two of them previously unreleased.

Many people believe that some guitars simply have songs in them, waiting to be let out (like @johnnymarrgram and the Gibson), but we think that pedals can also have songs in them. Especially when you’re fortunate enough to have one of your favorite songwriter’s chorus pedals (RIP Jeff Runnings @for.against), with some of his presets still in there. Kim picked up the guitar, plugged it in, and this came out. Magic.

We also have Jeff’s final solo record coming in the mail (Jeffrey Runnings “Piqued” 2LP is out on @independent_project_records on July 11). He is missed and still inspires.
