Chicago Fashion Week brought me to Made Common — and this one felt different. #hosted Hosted by @stitchdown , Ford General and the @chicagofashioncoalition , the night brought together makers, designers and creatives around craftsmanship, personal style and things made to last. Ada’s Alley was such a cool setting, and DJ Jaime Hayes was incredible — the music gave the whole night such great energy. What I loved most was getting a first look at the community behind Stitchdown Expo’s return to Chicago November 6–7, expanding beyond its footwear roots into even more beautifully made goods. I am wearing my new double-breasted hopsack blazer by @ring_jacket, which I purchased from mu friends at @ford_general in Chicago's vibrant Old Town neighborhood. The @pattypleaser burger joint inside of @smallbarlogan makes the BEST smashburgers in Chicago! NOTES: First, the trousers are half of a charcoal suit that I rocked recently. Conventional wisdom advises against wearing suiting components as separates...however, you can do this if the suit's fabric or pattern doesn't scream "these are orphaned suit trousers!” (e.g. if the suit is made of navy flannel or has stripes). Here, the worsted wool suit trousers mesh well with the hopsack blazer. I do have charcoal worsted odd trousers, but they are flat-front and lack brace buttons, and I prefer to war pleated trousers with double breasted jackets. Second, the watch has a stainless steel case. Usually, I would wear a gold-ish watch to compliment the gold-toned blazer buttons. However, the black leather strap harmonizes with the charcoal trousers, charcoal hosiery, and black oxfords. Plus, the Speedie is iconic! Third, notice the mixing of patterns and colors. By keeping-ing the color palette consistent and harmonious, I was able to combine different patterns - stripes, checks, and paisley. Ford General - Glencoe, IL Tucked away in a suburb of Chicago not far from where I grew up is Patrick Ford’s second location of Ford General. I was just in town visiting some family and was really excited to pop by the shop. We met in Berlin last year and hit it off. I love seeing shops opening up in places you don’t expect them. That’s where they can have a huge impact. Glencoe is not place you’d expect to walk in a store and find incredible Japanese denim or the other ultra quality brands Ford General carries. Aging urban hipster look. Perhaps I should buy a turntable and start crate digging* for highly obscure, rare, and/or strange vinyl records. The plaid cotton shirt jacket/hunting shirt and spread collar chambray shirt are autumnal favorites.The sneakers are a recent gift from the amazing Dr. Robin. This particular section of the North Center neighborhood is called "St. Ben's" because of it proximity to St. Benedict's Roman Catholic Church. *"Crate digging": The act of searching through physical milk crates, bargain bins, thrift stores, and second-hand shops to find rare, vintage, or obscure vinyl records. A rainy day in the Windy City. Today was the last time I will wear this double-breasted khaki suit until next spring. It certainly has been a joy to wear. Thanks go to @fabianrrouge of @ford_general for the excellent alterations! The bold bengal striped club collar shirt works best with a solid necktie in order to avoid pattern-clashing and business. This shirt came with a screw-together collar bar, but I have found it cumbersome to use, so I use a collar pin instead. The striped pocket square brings additional visual interest. My favorite shoes to wear with this mustard-colored suit are these brown whole-cuts, which are sleek and understated. To kick off @thechicagofashionweek (and warm up for @stitchdownexpo 2026 Chicago on Nov 6-7) @ford_general, @chicagofashioncoalition, and @stitchdown are throwing a lil’ thing we’ve dubbed Made Common on Oct 9th at Ada’s Alley in Chicago. The idea’s pretty simple: create a space for makers, manufactuers, designers, materials specalists, repair professionals, retailers, and more to share a piece of their creative selves, and make the connections that drive their next great project.
