Main sessions
Who decides who gets watched, whose name belongs in a database, whose body justifies a check? How do these systems obscure and complicate witnessing, monitoring, evidencing, and responding by design? What does it mean when the right to protest is given just as easily as it is taken away, and how do we defend rights that are meant to protect us?

These questions are the centre of the three main sessions on 10 October.

When framing migration stories, we should never underestimate the power of words.
They not only fuel public debate but also influence policy.
And it is always people paying the price for bad policies.

Colonialism, genocide and resource extraction have never been abstract concepts.

They have designs and architectures. Their real-life consequences outlast the people who drew them.

This week, Spore is hosting an extensive program of events which unpack the histories and living legacies of colonial genocide in Namibia:

Thursday 8. October (2 – 6 pm): A workshop led by Marcella Katjijova (a clinical psychologist, and descendant of survivors of Germany’s first genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama peoples in present-day Namibia) and Vilma Duque (a social psychologist who has worked in post-conflict regions for decades with survivors of the genocide under Guatemala’s military dictatorship).

Thursday 8. October (8 – 10 pm): Launch of Eyal Weizman’s new book “Ungrounding: The Architecture of a Genocide”, followed by a discussion between Weizman and scholar Sami Khatib.

Saturday 10. October (9:30 am – 7 pm): A full day of Ovaherero cultural practices, panels and folklore music, marking 122 years of resistance.

Sunday 11. October (5 – 9 pm): The opening of Fractured Lifeworlds’ second season, “Wind”.

Join us this week at the Spore house.

How can designers and other citizens develop alternatives to ensure greater justice in society? What space do we need to question systemic flaws and violence? How can the experiences of victims of police violence and their next-of-kin contribute to this?

In the lead-up to the Building Public Truths exhibition, Nieuwe Instituut presents an evening to reflect on ‘Designing Justice’, making visible and interrogating the design of systems and institutions, historically structured through (unequal) distributions of freedom, access, and power in society. These systems have their roots in racial and colonial violence and continue to manifest in contemporary forms and places of exlusion.

Design can reflect and reinforce these existing shortcomings. It can also interrogate and redesign narratives, values, and structures and help build different public truths.

During this event, designers, researchers, activists and members of affected communities come together to share insights from their respective fields and to envisage ways of living together that potentially ensure greater justice and accountability.

Setareh Noorani (@unfolding_something), who will moderate the session, will introduce the French journalist, writer and filmmaker @rokhayadiallo, who will deliver the keynote address. This will be followed by contributions from the British human rights activist Marcia Rigg @inquest_org and from representatives of the research organisations collaborating with the Nieuwe Instituut on the Building Public Truths exhibition: @forensicarchitecture, @forensis.berlin, @index.ngo, and @controle_alt_delete

Designing Justice is part of an extended programme organised by Nieuwe Instituut with @bakbasecamp and @coloredqollective.

Ungrounding: The Architecture of Genocide

Thurs, 08. Oct | 8 – 10 pm
For adults | In English
At Spore Initiative (Hermannstr. 86, Berlin-Neukölln)

No registration required.

Eyal Weizman (@eyal_weizman) is the director of Forensic Architecture (@forensicarchitecture), a research agency that uses satellite imagery and other data to document human rights abuses and state crimes.

Since 2023, FA has been working to gather evidence for the genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

In his new book “Ungrounding: The Architecture of Genocide” (@penguinukbooks), Weizman explores what he calls the deep cartography of Gaza.

From the tunnels below, to the soil, settlements and barriers above, the book cataloges in detail the campaigns of violence and displacement that have made the territory unlivable.

Join us for a presentation of “Ungrounding” from Weizman, followed by a conversation with scholar Sami Khatib.

This year’s conference programme features Forensic Architecture and Forensis through a lecture by researcher Phoebe Walton.

Forensis is an investigative agency and sister organisation of Forensic Architecture, working with individuals and communities affected by state and corporate violence to produce evidence and support demands for justice, reparations and accountability.

Phoebe Walton, researcher at Forensis, will present counter-forensic investigations, including the police killing of Sammy Baker in Amsterdam and the recently published analysis of the police killing of Ibrahima Barry in Mülheim, Germany. She will discuss how Forensis and Forensic Architecture work with visual and spatial evidence, combining technical and forensic methodologies with the situated knowledge of affected communities.

Video installations of both the killing of Sammy Baker in Amsterdam and the killing of Ibrahima Barry in Mülheim will be exhibited at Katoenhuis as part of the Conflux exhibition programme, open from Thursday to Sunday.

Alongside Phoebe’s lecture, the conference programme includes a talk by Katažyna Jankovska and a panel, What Do You Do When Everything You Do Is Not Enough?, moderated by Bambí Benkö, with Camille Sapara Barton and Jerry Afriyie. Tina Farifteh unfortunately won’t be able to make it to the panel, we wish her all the best. The conference also includes artist talks by Yara Mekawei and Anne Wenzel.

The programme starts at 12:00 at Keilepand and will be moderated by Eric Parren. Access is possible with a separate conference ticket or the passe-partout, valid for all paid parts of Conflux.

See you at the conference!
