Join us as we gather for a reoccurring practice of collective re-membering.

Miriam Gatt (@fresh_fish_fresh_fish) will be reading from her new prayer book, titled ‘Re-membering’, and guiding us through an exercise for collective re-membering.

The prayer book reflects on memory as resistance against the colonial divisions of time and includes instructions for exercises aiming to reassemble what has been dis-membered, erased and lost. This work is an outcome of Miriam’s participation in the Vigil Workspace programme in July 2024, by invitation of Endrosia on behalf of the Cyprus Pavilion team (@forever.informed).

Sound, surveillance and the unseen histories of Cyprus — Emiddio Vasquez, PhD candidate at the School of Arts, Media and Engineering at Arizona State University, plays a central role in Forever Informed at #VeniceBiennale2024. Through sonic installations like 'Organ' and critical writings featured in Nero’s latest publication, Vasquez examines ‘ghosting’ and contested landscapes, reshaping our understanding of presence and absence.

Forever Informed (@forever.informed ) was a collective project by Lower Levant Company (@lowerlevantcompany) (Peter Eramian, Emiddio Vasquez), Endrosia Collective (@endrosia) (Andreas Andronikou, Marina Ashioti, Niki Charalambous, Doris Mari Demetriadou, Irini Khenkin, Rafailia Tsiridou, Alexandros Xenophontos), and Haig Aivazian, conceived for The Cyprus Pavilion (@cyprusinvenice) at the Venice Biennale 2024.

This review stands as a witness of this already concluded experience, the space has closed but the vision still lingers, as the discourses remain open and relevant. It will soon be followed by a conversation that dives deeper into the project.

On 28 September at 20:30, the Cyprus Pavilion presents MYRRHA: a promenade performance as part of Endrosia’s Vigil Residency programme.

The future collapse of KINYRAS – a domestic subsea cable running along the coast of Cyprus, named after the mythical king who was unwittingly seduced by his daughter, Myrrha – initiates a series of short-circuits.

While the myth details Myrrha’s punishment by the gods, who transform her into a myrrh tree with a constant stream of aromatic sap representative of her tears, the project reconfigures the tale, intertwining it with that of Medea. Ancient myth, tragedy and vengeance are suspended information spirits, collapsed into an ensemble of choreographed, vocal and sonic experiments.

On the 12th of December 2023, a group of 85 people went missing on their journey from Lebanon to Cyprus. According to relatives, they had reached Cypriot waters just before they lost contact. We have summarised and visualised the publicly available information of this incident.

Despite Cypriot authorities having been alerted to the presence of the boat, and having extensive surveillance equipment at their disposal, the people were never found.

In December, two bodies were washed up on the shore of Syria, one of whom was identified as Muhammad Al-Khasawneh, a passenger on the boat. The other people were never found. However, several bodies have been washed up on shores in the area: one in Syria, eight bodies in southern Türkiye, six in north Cyprus and one in the south of Cyprus. It is unclear if they belonged to the boat.

The unknown identities of the bodies leaves families in a continuous state of uncertainty, preventing them from reaching any form of closure.

We demand that the Cypriot authorities carry out a full investigation to determine the fate of the boat and its passengers.

We remember Muhammad Al-Khasawneh.

Our thoughts are with the relatives of the missing people.

More extensive information on the case and the missing people can be found on the website of @darajmedia.

On the 13th of February 2024, the Cypriot authorities attempted to perform an illegal pushback of a boat carrying 116 passengers en route from Lebanon. We have summarised and visualised the publicly available information of this incident.

The details of what happened to them at sea remain unknown, however, the paths seen on tracking websites show that instead of rendering assistance and rescuing them, as stipulated by international law (Art. 98 UNCLOS), authorities left them at sea, needlessly putting human lives in danger. It further illustrates Cypriot authorities’ willingness to openly and repeatedly break international law by engaging in refoulement.

The participation in the operation of a boat that was acquired using EU funding, indicates the direct complicity and support of the EU in illegal practices.

For more information on attempted pushbacks in Cyprus and the new EU-Lebanon deal on “migration management,” see the previous post.
