SEPT 11 • ST EUPHROSYNOS ~ THE COOK OF ALEXANDRIA 🍎 Entering the monastic life in Alexandria he was judged to not be fit for any service & was made to work as a cook & there he laboured without complaint. He was looked down upon most of the other monks. One night, a priest at the monastery had a vision that he was in paradise & St Euphrosynos was there too! Euphrosynos gifted the priest 3 fragrant apples. In the morning the priest wasn’t sure if what he experienced was a dream or a vision but it was made sure it was that of a real experience when he saw the three apples beside him. He approached Euphrosynos & asked him where he was last night to where he responded “I was there with you in paradise”. When asked by the priest what he gifted him he told him of the three apples. The priest spread the story among the other monks and priests. It’s believed he left the monastic life & lived a life in the desert. . A beautiful icon created by Eleni from @forever_orthodox that I ordered especially for my sister in law & yiayia for Christmas last year!

Back in Stock & Available - St. John Chrysostom and the Jesus Prayer. Published by NewRome press. Translated by, Very Rev. Archimandrite Maximos Constas and Rev. Fr. Peter Chamberas Book: Sewn hardcover, 140pp. Since the middle Byzantine period, one of the most widely read texts on the Jesus Prayer was a lengthy letter said to be written by St John Chrysostom. The letter assumed increasing authority in the late Byzantine period when it was cited approvingly by the Synodical Tome of 1341, which championed the theology of St Gregory Palamas. The letter remained canonical reading through the eighteenth century, when it was mentioned by St Nikodemos in his prologue to the Philokalia. This book studies the history of this letter and its authorship, and presents the original Greek text together with a facing-page English translation. The book concludes with an additional work on the Jesus Prayer by St Mark of Ephesus. This gorgeous must-have spiritual read is available at our Melbourne Victoria Archdiocese Book Centre branch. In Stock & Available - The Sacred and Divine Liturgy оf our Father among the Saints John Chrysostom, Los Angeles - New York - Chicago: Sebastian Press 2018. The Sacred and Divine Liturgy оf our Father among the Saints John Chrysostom, is a new English edition of the primary divine service of the Orthodox Church, published by St Sebastian Press of the Western American Diocese, and edited by Bishop Maxim Vasiljevic of Western American Diocese. This translation is an adapted version of the texts of accurate English translations already existed in previously published service books, especially the translation of “The Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom” (2016) of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the Greek Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain, and various Greek, English, and Slavonic liturgical manuals. All previously existing translations were checked for accuracy and consistency and edited, when necessary. Modern English has been chosen for this edition, following the most common order to be found in the Greek and Slavonic language service books which reflect the Byzantine tradition. The dialogues between the celebrant and the deacon are also included with brief Rubrics. In the supplementary material a detailed explanation for the Hierarchical Liturgy is included. One notable difference found in this edition from all existing editions is an aesthetic quality: the book is in full color, entirely illustrated by Fr. Stamatis Skliris’ icons and frescos. - Perfect gift 🎁 - Colourful & filled with beautiful illustrations 🕯 - Easy to follow and read ✅👌 This gorgeous edition is readily available at our Melbourne Victoria Archdiocese Book Centre branch. Back in Stock & Available - Welcome to the Orthodox Church: An Introduction to Eastern Christianity by Frederica Mathewes-Green. 🌿🌿🌿🕯 ⛪️ 🕯🌿🌿🌿 There are other introductory books about Orthodoxy. This one comprehensively covers the history, theology, and practice, but with a twist: readers learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathewes-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to “venerate” an icon, to the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It’s the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even readers who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-read, and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East. Inviting rather than argumentative, this is a book Orthodox Christians will be giving to their friends. ________________________________________ This amazing introduction is readily available at BOTH our NSW and VIC book centre store ! New & Available - The Meaning of Icons by Leonie Ouspensky and Vladimir Lossky. Includes 160 pages of text with drawings, 13 black and white and 51 full color plates. It is linen-cloth and hard cover bound. In the last decades the art of icons has gained increased attention. Once icons were passed over by the art critics, or at most classified as popular art, although painters such as Matisse or Picasso went to Russia especially for the sake of studying this art. Most recently many books have been published on icon painting. Yet the present work is the first of its kind to give a reliable introduction into the spiritual background of this art. The introduction into the meaning and the language of the icons by Ouspensky imparts to us in an admirable way the spiritual conceptions of the Eastern Orthodox Church which are often so foreign to us, but without the knowledge of which we cannot possibly understand the world of the icon. The Byzantine theologian often sets the calling of an icon painter on an equal level with that of a priest. Devoted to the service of a more sublime reality, he exercises his objective duty the same way as the liturgical priest. The "spiritual genuineness" of the icon, the cryptic, almost sacral power to convince, is not alone due to accurate observation of the iconographic canon, but also the ascetic fervor of the painter. A very interesting section of the technique of icon painting is followed by the main part of the book, in which both authors describe the most important types of icons. Apart from a detailed description of the icon screen (iconostas) of the Russian Church, 58 types are explained with the aid of an equal number of illustrations, amongst which there are alone 10 various representatives of the virgin. Special mention is due to 51 icons reproduced in their complete colorful splendor. This timeless work is readily available at our Archdiocese Book Centre in MELBOURNE. To order, contact: Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia Book Centre Victoria. ☎️Tel. 03 9998 1813 📧Email: bookcentre.vic@hotmail.com 🏡Address: 7 Hartington street Northcote Victoria 3070.

Χρόνια Πολλά/Happy Name Day to all the George, Georgina’s, Giorgio, Georgia’s etc! Have a blessed day! A name meaning “Worker of the Land”, St Georgio is seen slaying a dragon in his icon. “According to tradition, the dragon was guarding a spring in Libya and it wouldn’t let the residents take any water if they didn’t first sacrifice one of their compatriots. The victim was chosen by drawing lots. One day, this happened to be the princess. The monarch begged for her life to be spared, but to no avail. She was offered to the dragon, but then Saint George appeared and faced the dragon, protecting himself with the sign of the Cross. He slayed the dragon, and rescued the princess. The citizens abandoned their ancestral paganism and converted to Christianity.” (GreekReporter.com) He was later killed for refusing to renounce his Christian faith! What a beautiful icon created by @forever_orthodox ~ Bravo, Eleni! Χριστός Ανέστη!

Christ Has Risen! Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they went to the tomb when the sun had risen. And they were saying to one another, "Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb?" And looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled back —it was very large. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe; and they were amazed. And he said to them, "Do not be amazed; you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen, he is not here; see the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you." MAY YOU ALL HAVE A BLESSED PASCHA! ❤️🙏🏼
