WEEK 1 RECAP 🇦🇸🇼🇸🌺

Week 1 of our MANUIA Family Fall Project began rooted in the traditions of our people.

We opened with the Sā—the ringing of the bell signaling a time of stillness, evening prayer, and reflection, a tradition still practiced throughout Sāmoa today. While introducing this custom to our students, a handful of kids began to chuckle and giggle and we reminded the room that this was totally OK. It’s a part of the learning experience that we don’t want change or restrict. We encouraged our participants to allow themselves grace while embracing every tradition, custom and ceremony we introduce throughout the season.

From there, we experienced the ‘Ava Ceremony(Sauniga o le ‘Ava), honoring customs passed down through generations and creating a meaningful learning experience for everyone in the room.

Our Week 1 focus was : FA’ASINOMAGA—knowing our roots, strengthening our identity, and understanding who we are as people of Sāmoa and the vast Pacific. Before we know where we are going, we must first understand who we are and where we come from.

In the words of Afioga Aʻeʻau Christopher Hazelman:

“Our identity is not negotiable…One body, one people, one ocean, one Pacific. We are not small island states, we are the caretakers of the largest ocean in the world.”

We continued the evening with refreshments, fellowship, and five breakout classes filled with learning, conversation, and connection.

A heartfelt fa’afetai tele lava to Rev. Hector & First Lady Herema Pouono for your presence, prayers, and words that set the tone for this journey. May God continue to bless you, your ministry, and your service to His people.

To our Staff, Core Team, students, participants, and families—thank you for showing up STRONG and making Week 1 so special. This is only the beginning.

Into Week 2 we go—one village, one family, ONE MANUIA. 🌺

Theme for our MFFP ‘26 :

“TAOFI MAU TALATU’U O TUA’Ā
Holding firmly to the traditions of our ancestors.”
