@forevertkl is bringing 2014-15 soundcloud vibes back with his new song 😭🔥 bro might just bring back the classic days ngl 💿

2016 was the year SoundCloud rap started becoming a real movement instead of just an underground internet scene. Young artists could upload songs themselves, build audiences without radio or major labels, and receive immediate feedback from listeners.

The scene was split between different styles. Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty brought colorful fashion, melodic hooks, and energetic “rockstar” personalities, while Florida artists such as XXXTentacion, Ski Mask the Slump God, Smokepurpp, and Lil Pump created a darker and more aggressive sound. Playboi Carti, Denzel Curry, and other artists also helped expand the scene’s experimental and internet-based identity.

Lil Uzi Vert was one of the biggest names of the year. His project Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World and songs such as “Money Longer” helped bring SoundCloud’s style into the mainstream. He was also the platform’s most-followed artist in 2016, showing how powerful his online audience had already become.

Florida’s underground scene was especially important. XXXTentacion’s “Look at Me!” became known for its distorted production and explosive delivery, while Ski Mask’s “Catch Me Outside” and Lil Pump’s “D Rose” represented the chaotic, bass-heavy sound that would soon dominate internet rap playlists. Smokepurpp and Lil Pump also helped turn the producer-rapper relationship into part of the scene’s identity, often creating music quickly and releasing it directly online.
