9 DAYS. 2 FEET OF SNOW. 40 MPH WINDS. 3 BULL’S I WILL NEVER FORGET. 🏔️🦌

Eight days deep in the Flat Tops, chasing some of the most incredible animals North America has to offer. Climbing ridges, glassing timber, covering miles, and learning quickly that the mountains have absolutely no interest in making things easy for you.

We endured an estimated 24+ inches of snow, with winds reaching 40 MPH some nights. Frozen mornings, brutal conditions, snow covered terrain, hypothermia, exhausted legs, lungs literally giving up…Alan, & the constant challenge of adapting to whatever Mother Nature had planned for us next.

But that is the reality of backcountry hunting. You do not get to choose the conditions. You only get to choose how you respond to them.

And then there is a moment like this.

There is something almost impossible to explain about finally laying your hands on an animal that, until that moment, had never been touched by a human. After spending days pursuing him in his own world, watching him move through the mountains, and working to get close enough for an opportunity, finally being there with him brings every emotion full circle.

The exhaustion, the uncertainty, the cold, the miles, the anticipation, and every ounce of effort suddenly take on a whole new meaning. You are no longer thinking about the miserable nights or the conditions you endured. You are standing there, realizing you have experienced something incredibly rare, in a place that remains wild enough to make you earn every second of it.

For me, that is one of the most humbling parts of hunting. It is about more than the animal itself. It is the connection to the wilderness, the respect for the life taken, and the gratitude for an experience that cannot be manufactured or replicated.

The Flat Tops Grand Slam was never just about filling tags. It was about immersing myself in this incredible mountain range, pursuing multiple species, testing my limits, and experiencing the Flat Tops in their rawest form.

The mountains take PLENTY from you….but every once in a while, they give you something you could never put a price on.

That is what ELK CAMP represents.

REBUILD TO BECOME UNBREAKABLE.

🏹🦌ADRENALINE IS ONE HELL OF A DRUG🦌🏹

This hunt was a pretty good reminder that you can’t let one mistake ruin the rest of your day.

At first light, an absolute ALL TIME PB BUCK walked in at 30 yards. I had the shot, but he stopped in the absolute worst possible spot for that stand. I rushed it, missed, and just like that, the biggest buck I’ve ever had in front of me was gone.

But that’s archery hunting…🤷‍♂️

You miss…You learn…You move on…

A wise man once told me…”treat it like water off a ducks back”

So I switched stands, freshened up the luck, settled back in, and a few hours later another buck came walking through the goldenrod at 58 YARDS.

Not my all time PB…

But definitely a BOW PB. 🎯

I wasn’t sure if he was going to load like the last one, so I picked my spot carefully this time…and aimed bottom heart…NOT Center lung 🥴

He never loaded.

And in great fashion, the arrow found exactly where I aimed.

Perfect heart shot. 58 yards. Through waist high goldenrod😎

And that’s when the buck jitters showed up. 😂

Funny how you can be completely calm, execute the shot, watch the deer go down, and then suddenly your body decides it’s time to hit the panic button.

That’s why I’ll always live by one simple motto:

“ARROWS IN THE QUIVER DON’T DELIVER.”

Training matters. Putting in the reps matters. Shooting at distance matters. Building confidence before game day matters.

But eventually, you have to let the arrow fly.

You can’t kill a deer you’re afraid to shoot at. You can’t wait for perfect conditions every time. And you can’t let one bad shot convince you that the next opportunity is going to end the same way.

You train so that when the moment comes, you’re ready.

Then when game day comes…

LET THE ARROW FLY.

58 yards later, I’m damn glad I did. 🏹🦌

🏕️🥩🏔️THE MOST UNDERRATED HUNTING ADVICE YOU’LL EVER GET🏔️🥩🏕️

GET YOUR LIFE IN ORDER BEFORE YOU LEAVE.

A lot of people think the hardest part of a backcountry hunt is the mountains.

It’s not.

Sometimes the hardest part is what’s happening in your head.

One of the biggest reasons hunters cut hunts short is because they start convincing themselves that something back home needs to be handled.

A bill. A chore. Something with work. Something around the house. Something they forgot to take care of before they left.

And once you start thinking about it long enough, suddenly that 10 day hunt turns into a 7 day hunt.

Then a 5 day hunt.

Then you’re driving home.

Handle your responsibilities BEFORE you leave.

Get the bills paid. Get the house in order. Get the vehicles taken care of. Talk to your family. Make sure the people back home have everything they need.

Because when you’re thousands of miles away, deep in the mountains, you want your mind focused on the hunt.

Not convincing yourself that you need to go home.

I’m getting everything lined up before I head to Colorado for the Flat Tops Grand Slam.

The mountains are going to test me enough.

I’m not giving my own mind a reason to quit.

Prepare at home. Commit in the mountains. Finish what you came for.

TRAINING IS OVER…THE HUNT IS HERE🐻🦌🏔️

🔥 THE FUEL BEHIND THE FLAT TOPS GRAND SLAM 🔥

What does it actually take to fuel a backpack hunt through the mountains?

I broke down my entire food plan down to the calorie, macro, weight and cost.

ONE DAY OF FOOD:

🥧 1 serving Pop Tarts
380 calories | 3g protein | 66g carbs | 9g fat

🍚 2 Rice Crispy Treats
180 calories | 2g protein | 34g carbs | 5g fat

🍫 2 Granola Bars
180 calories | 2g protein | 34g carbs | 5g fat

🥫 1 can Meat Loaf
1,140 calories | 44g protein | 8g carbs | 96g fat

🐟 1 can Sardines
160 calories | 17g protein | 2g carbs | 8g fat

🍜 2 Ramen
760 calories | 16g protein | 108g carbs | 28g fat

💧 2 Hydration Packs
100 calories | 0g protein | 26g carbs | 0g fat

⚡ 2 C4
10 calories | 0g protein | 0g carbs | 0g fat

🔥 DAILY TOTAL 🔥

2,910 CALORIES / 2.05LB / $9.20 PER DAY

84g PROTEIN
278g CARBS
151g FAT

💰 ABOUT $9.20 PER DAY

And that is the crazy part.

This isn’t a luxury menu.

This is calculated mountain fuel.

Every calorie has a purpose.
Every ounce has a purpose.
Every dollar has a purpose.

I’m heading into the Flat Tops to chase something that doesn’t happen often.

🐻 BEAR
🫎 ELK
🦌 MULE DEER

ALL THREE.

IN ONE MOUNTAIN RANGE.

THE FLAT TOPS GRAND SLAM.

Picture waking up above 10,000 feet with everything you need strapped to your back.

You eat what you carried.

You drink what you carried.

You climb until your legs are smoked.

Then you wake up and do it all over again.

For days.

The food isn’t fancy.

The mountains don’t care.

And the animals definitely don’t EITHER😂

The only thing that matters is having enough fuel to keep moving when the mountain starts taking everything you have.

This is the fuel behind the mission.

THE FLAT TOPS GRAND SLAM IS HERE. 🏔️🥩🇺🇸

Friday we head west. 🏔️🐻

I picked up 4 cases of Monster to help pull off the Flat Tops Grand Slam, specifically the 72 hours in the truck round trip😂

One case gets me to Colorado.
One case gets me back home.
One case keeps me fueled while I’m in Colorado.
And one case until Colorado.

The Flat Tops Grand Slam is the goal of chasing all three big game species in one mountain range: bear, elk and mule deer. 🐻🦌🏔️

Picture this…

One mountain range.
One backpack.
One long season.
Three species.
And thousands of miles of roads and mountains standing between me and that slam.

Friday, Part 1 begins.

I’m heading into the Flat Tops to spend September backpacking through the mountains chasing bear. No hotel. No easy miles. Just a heavy pack, big country, and a whole lot of mountain ahead.

Bear first. Elk next. Mule deer after that.

Three species. One mountain range.
The Flat Tops Grand Slam starts SOON.
