US funders have demanded that grantees retract statements supporting Palestine, delete social posts, and “stay in their lanes.”
This is philanthropic power being used to silence solidarity.

In today’s #WhatToReadToday, Andrea Lynch and Farhad Ebrahimi argue that Palestine reveals how funding silos can control which injustices movements may name—and punish them for recognizing how their struggles connect.

People do not lead single-issue lives. Philanthropy cannot support collective liberation while forcing movements into artificial divisions.

Drawing on Funders4Palestine’s Raise the Bar tool, they show how people inside philanthropy can identify who controls decisions, organize colleagues and boards, and share risk with grantees.

For funders, solidarity requires more than statements of support. It requires sharing risk, sustaining funding, and following community leadership.

If you're in Oakland September 16th please stop by for the launch of the Because We Need Each Other zine!

I won't be there, but a labor of love I've been working on over the summer has come true and it's beautiful.

Because We Need Each Other is a movement based intervention against cancel culture, call-out culture, and other harmful responses to intra-movement conflicts.

What began as a series of gatherings bringing together movement leaders has grown into a series of articles co-published by Convergence Magazine and The Forge: Organizing Strategy and Practice.

This event will celebrate the launch of the BWNEO Zine, published by Nomadic Press, is full of language and images to support our movements remember that we need each other for our liberation.

Join us for a discussion with two of the Zine’s co-authors - Shilpa Jain and Kazu Haga, and illustrator @Kylie Tseng, moderated by @Cayden Mak of Convergence. Shoutout to our fourth co-author @Erika Sasson.

Before an armed mob overthrew the elected government in Wilmington in 1898, a media machine spent months manufacturing public consent. 📰⚡️

They used invisible power to manipulate media, stoke racial fear, and shift public consciousness so ordinary citizens would cheer for the destruction of their own democratic safeguards.

Fast forward to today: the ink-stained printing presses have evolved into algorithmic echo chambers, but the core playbook remains unchanged.

In Part 3 of my latest series for @ForgeOrganizing, "Invisible Power, Exploited Disinformation: The Architecture of Manufactured Consent," I dive into:
👉 How historical media campaigns laid the groundwork for violent coups and historical revisionism.
👉 How modern digital disinformation ecosystems use fear and cultural scapegoating to shatter multiracial solidarity.
👉 Why we must build cognitive immunity, reframe narrative traps, and deploy intersectional futurism to protect our collective future.

We cannot win lasting structural change if we allow the opposition to dictate what the public believes to be true, normal, or dangerous.

“When hidden power is successfully appropriated, it creates structural violence: a system where laws, ordinances, and economic policies do the damage that bullets used to do.” — Rachel Branaman, Principal at Talem Consulting & Author of Rooted Together 🗣️📉

Breathing room. Choices. The space to live out a dream.

In @forgeorganizing, @firstblacknerd and Jhumpa Bhattacharya of @themavencollaborative make the case that the racial wealth gap is a matter of policy design, not individual behavior, and that the frameworks we build for wealth and family security have to move past the myth of the self-made.

Winning elections and passing legislation are huge milestones but history teaches us a brutal truth: winning progress is not the same as keeping it. 💥

We're thrilled to share the first piece in a new three-part series by @rachelbranaman for @forgeorganizing on power dynamics.

In the late 1890s, Wilmington, NC was home to a thriving multiracial democracy. Black Republicans and working-class white Populists united as "Fusionists" to defeat the ruling political elite at the ballot box. They won elections, took municipal office, and built real economic independence. 🏛️

Then came November 1898.

Panicked by their loss of control, the displaced elite didn't accept defeat, instead they launched a violent, coordinated coup d’état.

Why? Because while the Fusionists held visible power (titles, offices, and votes), the old hierarchy retained control over wealth, force, and the institutions that enforced both.

It’s a historical lesson with direct implications for how we organize, build coalitions, and protect our communities today. ✊🌐

💬 How is your organization moving beyond visible wins to build long-term, resilient structural power? Drop your thoughts below! 👇
🌟 Stay tuned for Part 2 where we dive into hidden power and codified inequity tracing the roots of Jim Crow to Project 2025.

The fight for worker justice doesn’t end when a law gets passed. We have to make sure the law is enforced, and new worker rights are respected. That’s why our work on the POWER Act continues: organizing, educating, and holding employers accountable for following the law.
