@nota.tavern, a Chicago Italian-American restaurant reinterpreted in Mexico City designed by @formant.studio

@nota.tavern in Mexico City’s Escandón neighborhood is a personal interpretation of Chicago’s Italian-American cuisine, a place built on memory and familiarity, and on the experience of gathering around food.

For the design, the family turned to @formant.studio, a practice that works across architecture, interiors, sound, light and materiality. Custom design sits at the heart of the studio’s work, with bespoke furniture, lighting and architectural elements developed so that the look of a space and the way it functions remain clear and coherent.

At NOTA, the studio explored the principles of modernism and minimalism through clean lines, precise proportions and a pared-back palette of honest materials. Rather than directly referencing the traditional American tavern, the design translates its warmth and informality into a contemporary architectural language.

NOTA is an Italian-American tavern in Mexico City’s Escandón neighborhood, inspired by
the food culture of Chicago.

The project grew out of the story of a family who spent many years living in the city before moving to Mexico, bringing with them the recipes, flavors, and traditions that shaped their everyday life.

Through NOTA, they share a personal interpretation of Chicago’s Italian-American cuisine, creating a place rooted in memory, familiarity, and the experience of gathering around food.

The interior design explores the principles of modernism and minimalism through clean lines, precise proportions, and honest materials. The spatial composition emphasizes visual continuity and the integration of different elements, creating a restrained and timeless atmosphere where light and materiality define the experience of the space.
