HUGE effort post here, as I’ve been obsessing over that semi-forgotten period (roughly 2005-2010) when minimal techno lost its mind and warped into a chemically scrambled caricature of itself. Within a few years, the music went from the clinical monochrome of early Plastikman and Sleeparchive to stuff like John Spring’s “Lava Lava”: cartoonish, almost slapstick dance music running on rubbery basslines, absurdist hooks and over-the-top fx.

This mutation was largely driven by Italian producers pulling off a trick not unlike that of Italo disco two decades earlier: taking a sound rooted in Black US dance music, getting a lot of its “rules” gloriously wrong, and turning out a flood of records with heaps of charm and wonkiness added to the form. Massi DL’s “Minimal Mushrooms” is a prime example…

…and another is Lucio Aquilina’s melodic megahit “Magic M”. Like many of this scene’s most prolific producers, Naples-based buddies Massi and Lucio would go on to do great things in the rather less zany post-2010 era, re-emerging as Nu Genea, the acclaimed live dance outfit.

But let’s move on from the Italians for a bit. Just before Berghain techno and Panorama Bar house became the default setting for dancefloors worldwide, German producers like Gabriel Ananda were pushing club music into stranger, wilder territory.

“Doppelwhipper” was a scene-defining anthem: a 9-minute live recording propelled by mismatched loops slipping against each other before locking into one of the great drops of the 00s.

Andre Crom’s slightly more obscure Ambulanz EP from 2007 kept things simpler but equally bouncy. There was no shortage of records like this at the time, but “Psychiatrie” jumped out from the record shop listening pile with its straight-to-the-point sound design, brilliantly dumb hooks and relentless groove.
