With the passing of space, time, and memory
concluded,
they outstretched their palms,
linking arms
on either side
of one another.

The chosen spirit
stepped into
the makeshift circle,
a gentle hum surrounding all sides.
 Each throat began to open
oldest (youngest) to youngest (oldest)
working its way around on all sides.

The spiritual rang out
Will the circle be unbroken?
By and by Lord, by and by
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky.

With heads lifted high
52 palms,
turned upward
the light appears
…

The unknown.

The ritual concluded,
the circle expands.

Another set of hands
finds another.
The newest spirit is wished well
and sent on his way.
The first to lead the procession down the lane.

Holding the weight
bequeathed
to handle the year ahead.

A salute of 250 fingers
high in the air
as well wishes
for safe travels are exchanged.

The chain extended
beyond memory,
beyond flesh,
beyond the measurable,
binding the (meta)physical
to the spiritual. __________________________

For perhaps
the circle
was never meant
to remain unbroken.

Perhaps
it was always meant
to break open in an effort to stretch and to grow.
To make room.

To continue to be broken in an effort to always learn from the past
while looking towards the future.

To wait
for the hands
that have not yet arrived.

Until the home in the sky
- appears
dropping down a ladder
leading towards
golden doors
thrust open
wide.
