When clients come to us with an existing home to remodel or demolish, we make sure we salvage as much as possible. More often than not, that means we pair up with @fortcollinsrestore to donate whatever we can. On the latest project, we were able to donate some ceiling fans, cabinets and vanities. Helping out locally is what keeps everyone going - and here at Hammersmith, we enjoy reducing wasteful practices when we have the opportunity to find new homes for items instead. Thanks, @fortcollinsrestore, for all your help!

Today we planted some replacement trees in our orchard using a new method to help us use our water resources more sustainably. We started digging our 3’ diameter and 3’ deep holes with a pick ax which says a lot about our soil.

Then we added several inches of pea gravel in the bottom and inserted a 4’ long 2” pvc pipe (thank you Restore!) into the gravel bed. We mixed some composted manure and not so composted stall sweepings with the poor quality soil. We used that to fill the hole to the level of planting and placed our new tree. We used the top soil from the excavation to top it off. The remaining poor quality soil was used to make a berm around the tree.

Last step, top water and fill the tube with water. The tube will encourage deep root growth to help the tree find underground water sources rather than relying on surface watering. This method (root training) was first developed by Ellen White in the 1800s.

Today I thought I would give everyone a tour of our chicken coops since it was coop cleaning day. This will probably be the last time we deep clean before winter in order to build deep litter to keep the coop warm on cold days. We have two coops (LaGrange-all you ZZ Top fans will get it, and Eggsit our broody coop). We have 3 levels of roost to accommodate our pecking order. It’s a mix of pvc pipe (the chickens got used to it after a bit of slipping and sliding) and wood rails. We have 2 double nest boxes. I settled on wood boxes after several failed iterations (milk crates and plastic dish pans). Our feeders are made out of 3” pvc pipe and an assortment of fittings. I would include the Pinterest post I found it on but they only included a picture and not a parts list. We designed it with large fixed windows which are actually doors from the Restore and smaller windows (also from the Restore)that open. The extra glass increases the chickens’ light exposure in winter and solar heats the coop. Last winter we used a small space heater to supplement on coldest days. After I cleaned the coop I moved the waste to our manure pile in the orchard where it will be used to fertilize in the spring. I like to keep my hens happy and productive!

It's the perfect time of the year to give a shout out to my favorite place...not only is this my favorite store but it's also for the most amazing cause...Habitat for Humanity! Their mission is to build a world where everyone has a decent place to call home🏠

Whenever I need anything this is always my first stop...when I needed an at home office desk...I found a REAL wood (seriously it feels like everything is some pressed form of wood these days) desk for $25!

We love perusing inside and outside for great finds and don't forget they take DONATIONS too!

I have yet to help build a Habitat for Humanity House but that has been on my list for years...let me know if you have any connections!

How do you get a wheelchair from place to place? 🤔 Have you ever put a wheelchair in the back of a car???? It's awkward and can cause injuries to folks that try! A simple session with one of our OT's or PT's can help with this and you will be so happy! These little things are actually BIG things. 😁 #covellcare #wheelchair #wheelchairmobility #accessibility #ramps #DME #wegotyourback
