If you’re going to @geosociety GSA Connects 2026 this week in Denver Colorado… do me a solid:

Make sure to spread the word that TWO major scientific MUSEUMS are under ATTACK: The Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and The Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas.

1️⃣ My museum, ANSP, has already closed its doors to the public. Many of my colleagues have been laid off (& I’m next), and there seems to be no official word from either BoTs on our efforts to find funding and save the museum. The @williampennfoundation offered a year’s worth of funding to keep the museum open while efforts are made for long term financial support!! They have yet to take that offer.

2️⃣ The same month, another abrupt announcement was made that the Sternberg Museum of Natural History would shut its doors in December. Another museum shut down because of “funding”, yet new articles are coming out that the president of Fort Hays State University has been in talks with an overseas antique dealer about selling off collections.

These two situations should frighten everyone. The Academy is the OLDEST NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM IN THE AMERICAS! Sternberg has A FISH WITHIN A FISH fossil! I haven’t had the pleasure or opportunity to visit, but now I wanna try and get there in case they do shut their doors like us.

The more that comes out about both institutions, we’re learning it was never about lack of public interest or funding. It’s about much more nefarious dealings: I’m disgusting beyond reason at what’s been happening over at Sternberg.

I believe @savethesternberg has a booth at GSA Connects, so make sure to go say hi! I wish I could run over and make a booth about the Academy!

Please make sure to keep being loud and have your voices heard by your representatives and the powers that are closing down museums and gatekeeping science from the public. Also follow @savetheacademy and @savethesternberg because they are doing great jobs at keeping the public informed (including me!!!)

Make sure to also comment on @acadnatsci and @sternbergmuseum to let them know how much you love the museums and want them to be open 💜

Don’t let museums go extinct.
