It’s never about having the perfect tools. Artists have always found a way to create—with what they have, where they are, and with the people around them. Because sometimes the most valuable creative tool isn’t a tool at all. It’s community. It’s having people who challenge you, inspire you, encourage you, and remind you why you wanted to make something in the first place. You don’t need permission. You don’t need perfect circumstances. And you don’t need AI to make art. You just need to decide to begin. Go make art. #MakeArt #IndieArtists #TheatreMakers #CreativeCommunity #PlayfulSubstance

New York is full of artists making something extraordinary. 🎭✨ They’re writing in coffee shops. Rehearsing in tiny rooms. Creating in borrowed spaces. Taking risks, experimenting, and making magic—often long before anyone else knows their names. The next great playwright, director, performer, or storyteller might be your neighbor. Know the artists BEFORE everyone else. Keep the Indie Spirit Alive in NYC. Follow along, show up, and support the artists who are keeping New York’s creative spirit alive. 🗽❤️ #NYCTheatre #IndieTheatre #NYCArtists #IndependentArtists #SupportArtists #PlayfulSubstance #IndieSpirit

Do you need to know every storytelling framework before you can tell a good story? Aristotle. Campbell. Save the Cat. The Story Circle. 3-act structure. 5-act structure. It can feel like you need a whole library of theory before you're allowed to touch the blank page. But here's the thing: you don't need to know it all before you begin. The blank page isn't a test. It's an invitation to experiment, learn, and discover what your story needs along the way. So start writing. Learn as you go. Find the tools that help you—and let the story lead the way. ✨ Consider the blank page your invitation to adventure. #PlayfulSubstance #TheatreMakers #Storytelling #Playwriting #CreativeProcess

In June of this year, I lost my biggest cheerleader- my sister Pamela to cancer. For those of you who have navigated cancer with a loved one, you know that it was not quick and it was not peaceful. Making sense of this loss has become a full time job that I cannot quit. Grief does not accept a two week notice. I know. I tried. Somehow, through it all, art kept happening. These rooms were not just a joyful break from my personal business of healing, but were a constant reminder of the world of which I am still a functioning part. Special, special thanks to @garcialoveslife and @dpleva for keeping the work going and keeping me upright through it all. There are so many artists here and literally hundreds more pictures, I cannot possibly tag you all. IG only allows 20! Just know that your presence counts for so much more than you can possibly imagine. With gratitude from my sorta working vacation, Bree #indietheatrenyc #newwork #creativelife #gratitude

Me in my natural habitat talking stories with amazing artists. There is so much beautiful talent in this world that it seems a damn shame to look anywhere but inside the human heart. Know what I mean? #playwrights #indietheatrenyc #playfulsubstance #developmentalreading

“What is Playful Substance?” The answer isn’t as simple as “a production company” or “a school.” We’re a space where theater is explored, shared, questioned, and created together. We produce new work, offer workshops, invite audiences into the creative process, and make room for artists of every discipline to connect and grow. Because we believe the best art doesn’t happen in isolation—and art isn’t a competition. It’s a community. ✨ There’s room for all kinds. There’s room for you. #PlayfulSubstance #Theatre #TheatreCommunity #NewWork #PlayDevelopment

Yancy Drew was Brooklyn Funk Essentials’ first drummer. He played on the band’s debut club date in early 1994 at AKA on West Houston Street in New York. He wore his Crimson red poncho that night. Andrea Davis took his picture which ended up on the back of the original Dorado Records release of the Cool & Steady & Easy album later that year. Yancy looked cool. He played a pretty steady fatback and was always easy going. He loved goofing around and cracking jokes. His smokey slapstick midnight radio DJ voice can be heard on BFE tracks like Big Apple Boogaloo, Mizz Bed-Stuy and Kik It! But he also had a tender tenor vocal as featured on Keep It Together on the 1998 In The Buzzbag album where he is duetting with Stephanie McKay. A song he also co-wrote. But more than anything, Yancy loved playing the drums. This was apparent from his big smile while grooving away. It was impossible not to be infected by this joy, either as a fellow band member or part of the audience. Check out Yancy’s pocket on I Got Cash, Date With Baby or his swirling Drum & Bass infused groove on By & Bye. In the ’00s, health issues meant that Yancy could not always tour with BFE, but he continued to record with the band, playing on 2008’s Watcha Playin’ album as well as on the song Hold It Down from the Funk Ain’t Ova album in 2015. Yancy Drew Lambert passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 4, 2026. His last wish was for those who knew and loved him to celebrate the good times and memories and not be sad for that which we cannot control. Rest in forever gold, Yancy ❤️☮️🙂 Picture by Andrea Davis Kronlund from the Creator Has A Master Plan video shoot in Joshua Tree, California in 1995.

This July 4th, we acknowledge that human beings are not the most consistent creatures. However, within our inconsistency, it is still important to affirm your ideals and intentions- to check in and see how our actions align. We believe it is truly American to support the fullness of expression and personal exploration for all human beings everywhere. It is American to be welcoming (at least, it is the America we would like to see). And it is American to celebrate the continual act of BECOMING… Becoming knowledgeable Becoming skilled Becoming kinder Becoming wiser Becoming a community It is OK to hold on to ideals even when we have trouble reaching them. Keep reaching. Keep building. Keep listening. Keep learning. Happy Independence Day. #july4th #freespeechmatters #diversityandinclusion #america250 #theatrecommunity
