In Een Ander Licht / A Different Perspective

🎨 Sorry, not sorry - Hanneke Naterop
📸 Beauty and Pain - Henk Veldhuizen

In A Different Perspective
A new project by Hanneke Naterop and Henk Veldhuizen.
For this new project, we draw inspiration from the work of Erwin Olaf. What do these images say to us, and how can we translate that into new work? Painting and photography.

In consultation with the Erwin Olaf Estate, it was decided that we cannot show the original photographs. This, however, gives the viewer complete freedom to experience our work in their own way and to interpret it for themselves. It also offers an opportunity to take the time to revisit and truly appreciate Erwin Olaf’s remarkable work.

On Saturday, 31 October, from 3–4 PM, Galerie Ron Mandos invites you to a panel talk accompanying Zanele Muholi’s current exhibition Hlanganani (“Unite”).

Zanele Muholi will join in person, alongside Savannah Wolin and Rafik Opti, participants in Faces and Phases Amsterdam. Savannah Wolin is a multidisciplinary artist with a background in sociology whose work explores Blackness, transness and womanhood through theatre, fiction and poetry. Their project The Trans Yearbook comprises more than 70 portraits of trans people who no longer recognize themselves in their old school photographs.

Have you listened to this podcast yet?

25 years by his side. And two years after his death, his lifelong dream finally came true 💛

This is @shirleydenhartog , and this photo was taken right after we recorded together in the studio of Estate Erwin Olaf in Amsterdam. Shirley was Erwin’s manager, and one of his closest friends, for 25 years. She took care of the business. He took care of the art. And when he passed away, she became the one carrying his voice forward.

We talked about the exhibition Freedom at the Stedelijk Museum, the dream Erwin carried since he was a young photographer biking past it every day. About what it means to make decisions for someone who isn’t there to ask anymore. About trust, protection, and why she still asks herself, before every choice: what would he have wanted?

This is one of those conversations that really accompanies you long after you press stop.

Type ENGLISH and I’ll send you the link.

In Een Ander Licht / A Different Perspective

In A Different Perspective
A new project by Hanneke Naterop and Henk Veldhuizen.

For this new project, we draw inspiration from the work of Erwin Olaf. What do these images say to us, and how can we translate that into new work? Painting and photography.

In consultation with the Erwin Olaf Foundation, it was decided that we cannot show the original photos.

SPECTRAL | Erwin Olaf, Portrait of Hans van Manen, 2004, Courtesy of Galerie Ron Mandos, Amsterdam

For Erwin Olaf, dance and photography were inseparable. In 1984, he met Hans van Manen, the renowned choreographer and photographer, who recognized the younger artist’s eye for composition. Their encounter began a friendship and creative exchange. Dance offered Olaf a language of precision: every gesture, like every frame, had to be deliberate. His close-ups of dancers turned flesh into sculpture, revealing the effort behind the performance. Here, he portrayed van Manen in his signature pose, arms spread like an eagle’s wings. In November 2025, Nicolas Vamvouklis met van Manen at home in Amsterdam. Their conversation was published in the Observer shortly before his death.

With photographers-day already a yesterday .. a flashback clip featuring some of the photographers who have inspired me immensely during the start of my carreer, eventually leading me on to the photography-path myself. Amazing people, who helped me make a shift from one side of the lense to the other side once.. 📷. I am so proud and humbled to have known and worked with each of these unique artists during the 80ties &early 90ies, creatively shaping me by generously inviting me to experience their magic & adventurous vision up close..

Paul Jasmin - (featuring his portrait of a stylishly smoking Berry Berenson: who was a passionate photographer herself ..), Brad Branson / the photographer behind Indüstria, Greg Gorman, Erwin Olaf, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Thierry Manfred Mugler and Bruce Weber : my hero’s and nót only on photographers day - but cherished & remembered always.

Flowers are a subject that obsesses me for their ephemeral condition, a reflection of our own. I have written again about flowers, photography, memory and the passing of time in "Against Time", Erwin Olaf's exhibition at Baró Galeria, part of the Mallorca PhotoFest. ⏳

"When we look at a flower, we know that its beauty is inseparable from its transience. Its form is destined to change, and to do so within a short span of time. Disappearance is part of life, of all life. There is something profoundly beautiful, and at the same time tragic, in that single certainty. Photographing a flower, therefore, is not an innocent gesture. Least of all when it is done with the level of attention, precision, and sensitivity with which Erwin Olaf approached still life throughout much of his life."
