POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

I had a fabulous day yesterday at The Her Medicine event at the Foundling Museum.

It was wonderful to be in the company of such inspiring women. Such a mix of stories, so many emotions, and a stark reminder of just how much medical misogyny still exists.

I’ve left feeling uplifted and hopeful that, with so many amazing women working in this space, change will happen.

Big thanks to We the Patients, Patients Cann, all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the event so patient-friendly, and the sponsors who helped make it happen. And finally, to the Foundling Museum for welcoming us and giving us a space to come together!

The Token Bag has arrived at @foundlingmuseum, completing our collection with their wonderful team: two totes and a tea towel.

When you carry one of these totes, you carry more than one story of hope. The story of the Foundling Hospital and the tokens mothers left behind. The words of Lemn Sissay. And the skill of the women at @sreepurvillage in Bangladesh, who made every single piece.

In London? Go and say hello to them in the museum shop 👋

This changed British art history. 🎨

In the 1740s there wasn’t a single public art gallery in England. No National Gallery. No Royal Academy. No Tate. No British Museum.

That changed at the Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury, set up by Thomas Coram to care for London’s most vulnerable children. William Hogarth, one of its first governors, gave his portrait of Coram to the Hospital and persuaded other leading artists to donate their work too. Fashionable London came to see the paintings, and their donations went towards caring for the children.

It’s often called Britain’s first public art gallery. James calls it the ground zero of British art as we know it.

This week on Stories of Art, Hogarth Part 2. James and Alastair tell the story of how a children’s charity became the place where a British school of painting first went on public display, with Hogarth right at the heart of it.

The portrait still hangs at the Foundling Museum today, and it’s well worth a visit next time you’re in Bloomsbury.

Part two of two.

I’m working on a lecture for the Dickens Fellowship about ‘Child Mortality in Dickens’s Time’. Although this is a couple of decades out, I have to include this painting, which gets me like a twist in the gut whenever I see it at The Foundling Museum: “The Pinch of Poverty” (1891) by Thomas Benjamin Kennington (1856-1916).

Have you ever tried the blob challenge? 🟢

All you have to do is make a random abstract shape and then go in with a fine liner to turn it into something (whatever you first see in that shape, there are no rules!)

We experimented with this as a collaborative activity yesterday as a lowkey unpressurised way of connecting with fellow creatives 🗣️

Big thanks to fab Assemblage member @r0siegd & lovely @carmenzhu.creation for facilitating this workshop ✨

Some memories don’t need many words to carry a lifetime of meaning. ❤️

A quiet moment from the CONDUIT Mother Shrine, where visitors are invited to share drawings, memories, poems, and personal reflections about their mothers and mother figures.

Every contribution tells us something different about love, connection, and the people who have shaped our lives.

What memory of your mother would you want to preserve forever?
