Angela Brown left IU to pursue her calling as an opera singer and moved to New York City in 1999 where she landed her first cover contract with Metropolitan Opera, for the role of Aida, eventually debuting there in 2004. In addition to her operatic roles, Angela also devotes her time to the community as a dedicated philanthropist and educator. Ms. Brown has founded a non-profit organization, Morning Brown, working towards educating the wider public about opera. Morning Brown’s initiatives elevate rising multicultural stars and engage audiences that have been marginalized to facilitate accessibility and exposure to classical music.
She also developed a revue show entitled, Opera…from a Sistah’s Point of View, as a way to engage new audience members and demystify opera for the general public. Visit Angela Brown’s website and you’ll learn that “[t]he success of her signature show, Opera…from a Sistah’s Point of View, provided the momentum and cornerstone for an array of outreach and educational programs that have been presented in 20 USA states under the auspices of Morning Brown.”

In addition to her non-profit work, Ms. Brown also runs a vocal studio at the Indianapolis Opera, where she shares her expertise in vocal techniques and performance development, serving as a mentor to other vocalists. Her community involvement extends into her work as the Indianapolis Opera’s Artistic and Educational Ambassador. She also regularly hosts the podcast Melanated Moments along with music sociologist Joshua Thompson, highlighting “musical works composed by, for, and about Black people”.

As a result of her contributions beyond the concert stage, Ms. Brown is a proud recipient of the 2015 Indiana University Distinguished Alumni Service Award, the Jacobs School of Music Centennial Award, the Governor’s Arts Award from the Governor of Indiana, a Spirit of the Prairie Award from Conner Prairie in Indiana, and a member of the Indianapolis Public Schools Hall of Fame.

The collage was created with materials from the Angela Brown Collection (SC 155) at AAAMC.

On Sunday, August 30th Bloomington Ayuda along with Sergio Ospina Romero hosted An Afternoon of Solidarity with Colombia and Venezuela at the FAR Center for Contemporary Arts.

The afternoon was filled with incredible music and delicious food, all donated by volunteers. There were live music performances by La Salsoteca, Son Latin Groove, Palonegro, Andy Miller, Daniel Duarte, Mariachi Aires de Solidaridad and a community dance workshop led by Beatrice Capote.

We want to thank everyone who came out and participated, volunteered and donated their time, energy or resources. The event was a huge success and we raised $5,000 which was then matched by an anonymous donor! We are overwhelmed with gratitude and have been organizing to distribute funds between organizations both in Colombia and Venezuela (details to come!).

Special thanks to @uplandbrewco @social.cantina @panerabread, to our volunteers! Performers! And donors! 💛💙♥️

This Friday, Pictura presents TRACE 痕跡, a new photographic series by longtime Bloomington treasure Osamu James Nakagawa, distinguished Professor of Photography at Indiana University. In 2022, Nakagawa began a pilgrimage to visit the sites of Japanese-American incarceration camps. Trace combines photographs taken at these sites with photograms of found objects and rubbings of the memorials.

Using diptychs, Nakagawa pairs the past and the present, flattening the boundaries between them. TRACE seeks to reveal what can’t be seen anymore, things that happened eighty years ago and have been quietly buried. Through a direct and immersive process, using actual objects and surfaces from the sites, Nakagawa unearths this history of forced incarceration.

The sun sets on our Edition XI Series Award winning exhibition - Francisco Gonzalez Camacho (@frangccom)'s series You Can’t Enter the Same River Twice, exhibited at Pictura Gallery (@picturagallery) in Bloomington, IN.
•
The introspective series, exploring the concept of impermanence through creative techniques such as infrared, inversion, and photopolymer etching, was displayed as small hand-framed prints - each given the space to be taken in slowly and reflected on deeply. The perfect arrangement for a quietly mesmerizing body of work.
•
Our deepest thanks go to Mia Dalglish (@mia.dalglish) and Lisa Woodward for their expert judging, for their perfect curation, and for giving over their gallery space in the first place. And of course to Francisco for trusting us all with his work - a deserved winner and rewarding collaborator.
•
The Series Award is always a highlight of our year, and we can't wait to see what work we'll discover through the next one.

Our new gallery assistant, Darby @darbywilliamsphoto has begun exploring the Pictura gallery photobook library. This week she has been looking at la vie en rose by Malick Sidibé.

The book presents a collection of black-and-white photographs capturing the youth of Bamako, Mali, during the 1960s and 1970s. Created in the years following Mali’s independence from French colonial rule, Malick Sidibé’s images celebrate the energy and optimism of this generation’s newfound freedom and shape a modern national identity.

Darby will be sharing more library finds in the coming weeks for a little series called Pictura Reads, so stay tuned!

Next time you’re at Pictura, stop by the library to see this book or reach out and schedule a time to visit.
