Last night the festival welcomed Andrew O’Hagan all the way from Scotland for a sold-out event at Newcastle City Library. The wide-ranging discussion with @rosemariemilsom featured a laugh a minute, as O’Hagan shared the stories behind his most ambitious novel to date, Caledonian Road.

Thank you to Andrew and Rosemarie, everyone who joined us for the event, our wonderful volunteers, and festival bookshop, @macleansbooks. This event was presented in partnership with @briswritersfest and @newcastlelibraries and supported by the NSW government through @creatensw, as well as @fourthwave_ and @allenandunwin.

Last night we welcomed @suziemillerwriter to Newcastle for a special event reflecting on her remarkable career across theatre, literature and law.

In conversation with @rosemariemilsom, Suzie discussed her powerful new novel Inter Alia, which explores what happens when an eminent High Court Judge is forced to reckon with her professional life and role as wife, mother, friend, and feminist when a devastating crisis hits home.

NEW IN: WILD FOLK SHIRAZ

Joining our Wild Folk Pinot Noir is its darker sibling — the Nouveau Shiraz from Padthaway, South Australia.

Wild Folk are all about letting the vineyard & the grapes do the talking, rather than relying on heavy-handed winemaking. They’re a celebration of unadulterated fruit, with minimal handling & preservatives allowing a pure expression of South Australian vineyards. Wild by name, wild by nature.

Sitting on South Australia’s Limestone Coast, Padthaway is less famous than its neighbours Barossa & Coonawarra, but its cooler conditions help retain natural acidity & freshness in the grapes. Beneath the region’s loam sits ancient limestone, giving the wines a combination of fruit, structure & a distinctly savoury edge.

In the glass, this is Shiraz with plenty of blackberry, blueberry & plum, alongside cracked pepper, warm spice & earthy, savoury notes. Full-bodied & velvety, but with enough freshness to keep it bright rather than heavy.

Unapologetically wild, naturally delicious — just as Mother Nature intended.

Mum of three Fiona is navigating a newly single mum status after horrifically discovering her dirty husband had a whole other family and life in another state

Trying to keep everything together, and present some sort of normal to her kids and family, she finds quiet solace in Satoshi’s beautiful wine bar, where she becomes more and more intrigued by this beautiful and kind younger man

Satoshi is studying for the world’s hardest test, the Master Sommelier Exam. He can’t find reliable staff to manage the bar, and is running at a million miles, the only thing that stops him in his tracks is when his favourite customer Fiona visits the bar. Every time he sees her he falls more and more head over heels for her

After some heavy flirting they agree to a more casual situation, but very quickly it shows that there is something between them. However being is such different stages of their lives could this actually work?

While I read and LOVED the first book An Academic Affair, and we do get to see more of Sadie & Jonah, A Study in Sparkling can be read as a standalone
