“October, baptize me with leaves! Swaddle me in corduroy and nurse me with split pea soup. October, tuck tiny candy bars in my pockets and carve my smile into a thousand pumpkins. O autumn! O teakettle! O grace!” (Attachments by @rainbowrowell) 🍂

Fires crackling, cosy corners, hot tubs, a great big glass of red. Get your butt to the South West - it’s the most atmospheric place to spend Scorpio season.

At @fowlescombe Farm in South Devon, Creative Director @pauleldwinglade has let 500 years of farming lead the design. Limewashed walls, estate-quarried stone, wool from the farm’s own Manx Loaghtan sheep, and a dark-green, British-made raincoat for those very Devon days.

The result feels less like a hotel placed on a farm and more like a farm that grew into one, where proportion, touch and restraint do the talking.

Sometimes you just have to take a punt… 🌊

Monday’s conditions were about as bad as they could be for the start of the week.

Gale-force easterlies, swinging southeast, were pushing big swells right up Dartmouth Harbour.

Tuesday was looking like a complete write-off — never mind getting out to the scallop grounds, getting out of the harbour entrance was looking unlikely!

But the wind started to ease, and with Tuesday being the ONLY potential dive window for the next 10 days, I decided to head out on Monday evening and take a look at the actual conditions in Start Bay, including a view from Start Point.

The verdict? “Don’t go.” 😬

Tuesday morning came, and I thought I’d take a punt anyway.

The swell had swung northeast, leaving the harbour entrance manageable, but it was still rolling straight into the scallop grounds.

By the time I arrived, I’d pretty much decided to turn around and head home.

But then I thought… I’m here now. Might as well do a test dive.

24 dives later… and you got your scallops! ☺️🦪

All hand-picked, on a single breath, in conditions that really weren’t playing ball.

Just another day at the office! 🌊

34 editions. More than three decades of South West dining. And another chapter begins. 🥂

On Monday, we gathered at @acleafrestaurant at @boringdonhall to celebrate the launch of Edition 34 of the Trencherman’s Guide.

Chefs, restaurateurs, producers and friends of the guide came together for an afternoon that reminded us why this region’s food scene is worth celebrating.

A huge thank you to our hosts, the brilliant chefs and teams who created our launch lunch, our generous partners and everyone who joined us.

And to the restaurants featured in Edition 34: this one’s for you.

📖 The new guide is available now. Explore the launch gallery and order your copy via the link in our bio.
