A year ago today we shot Bloody Mary, a narrative short film I dreamed up in my little sicko brain. I mean it truly madly deeply that this project and bringing it to life with this group of people and the help of many others brought me the deep and utterly overwhelming sense of belonging that makes life worth living.

Every time I get a little distance from creative filmmaking I forget who I am. Not to say “who I am” is a filmmaker- I am much, much more than that. But filmmaking is a direct line to that essence, the inexplicable knowing of how I enjoy being alive on this existential plane. I found myself constantly with the corners of my mouth involuntarily pulling upward on set. A continuous evolving quake of goosebumps and shivers unearthing new ideas that just flew out of me all day before and on set. It’s amazing I’m ever not making films, the way it makes me high. Looking back through the footage and hearing me off camera directing- I feel like I both recognize my true self and in turn barely know her. In my voice, my on the spot problem-solving, my clarity, but with generosity of spirit and openness to ideas and change. In no other area does that personality so effortlessly flow from me. I love who I am there, it genuinely brings me to tears. I love her. Like she’s my child or something, and I’m so proud to hear her bravely be.

There were so many reasons to stress- money, time, the responsibility in directing, acting, organizing and keeping calm- but I do not remember this for the stress. I remember it with endorphins and passionately chasing something like a child.

There will be no way for me to thank everyone properly for what has been such an earth-altering event, BUT I WILL TRY LORD. Thank you to my crew and cast for jumping on so quickly and with such dedication and happy presence. Everyone was so insanely kind and excited. How lucky could I be!! 🩸 And to everyone near and far who donated to the production and sent encouragement!
