Nature is so interesting!

This mysterious thing is called a glowing fireworm and apparently it hasn’t been super well documented. The water here was not creating any bioluminescence so this was all created by this worm.

Glowing fireworms live in parchment tubes in the sea floor for most of the year but on some summer nights during new moon cycles, they come out to “play.” Female glowing fireworms leave their tubes and swim to the surface then release their eggs and glowing mucus. Males are attracted to this glow and swim up to the surface to spawn. Each female only does this once a night so it’s difficult to capture on video because it only lasts a few seconds.

It is unknown how many there are or how far they are distributed but this was filmed in Newport Harbor last night. Thanks to @foxseacharter for seeing this and alerting us to this very interesting event.
