Marisabela Tellería is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, sculpture, and installation. She employs a diverse array of traditional and ephemeral materials, developing a personal visual language that communicates through the senses. For over 25 years, her work has explored the nuances of visual perception and sensorial experience, investigating how we relate to physical phenomena, particularly in contexts with minimal information or limited visual stimuli.

Drawing from a distinctly abstract and reductive sensibility, Tellería creates quiet, meditative environments imbued with subtle complexities that encourage viewers to pause, observe deeply, and engage with what is present and absent. Her work invites an intimate act of seeing, while simultaneously prompting a reflection on the act of perception itself.

Tellería is currently presenting A Distant Blue, a solo exhibition curated by Sophie Bonet, on view at Fundación Pablo Atchugarry in Miami through October 3. Unfolding across sky, soil, border, and map, the exhibition holds distance as both subject and material, tracing identity not as a fixed point but as something carried, negotiated, and slowly reassembled through memory.

We invite you to visit the exhibition at Fundación Pablo Atchugarry, 5520 NE 4th Avenue, Miami, FL 33137.

The Sky’s Fingerprint
By Félix Suazo

The sky is a ceiling that can only be reached with a gaze. Marisa Tellería has taken the time to look up and explore the celestial space. “A Distant Blue,” her solo exhibition at the Pablo Atchugarry Foundation in Miami, gathers her observations along with those of many others. They are all fragments of the very same sky that shelters us. Except this coordinate-less territory bears its own fingerprint.

The artist returns to her investigation into perception and materials. Her premise is to appease the heterogeneous until the boundary between substance and representation is erased. That is when the domain of the gaze becomes plural and interchangeable.

While the indivisible sky sets the tone for a common territory, the artist builds her own firmament made of textile glazes, installation objects, images, and memories of her native Nicaragua. Yet, far from being anecdotal, the components of her project recreate liminal states and sensible affinities. There is, indeed, a veiled allusion to the civic blue that resists the red-and-black shadow.

Clearly, in the exhibition “A Distant Blue,” not everything is about the sky. It is also about what the French philosopher Jacques Rancière describes as a new “distribution of the sensible,” understood as that system of self-evident facts that makes the existence of a common world possible. In the face of loss and impossibility, a tiny piece of sky—“a royal blue parasol,” as Rubén Darío would say—is enough to shelter everyone from the elements.

‘A Distant Blue,’ a solo show by Marisabela Tellería, curated by Sophie Bonet. This exhibition explores the themes of distance, memory, and the ways we stay connected to places that are hard to get back to. In this exhibition, Marisa Tellería explores the relationship between sky, map, and material, showing how our identity is influenced not just by where we are, but by what we carry—through memory, through our bodies, and over time.
