As the earliest harvest on record gets underway in Champagne, International Pinot Noir Day seems a particularly good reason to turn to the darker side of the region.

Pinot Noir plays an enormously important role in Champagne, and few vineyards express its power quite like Clos des Goisses at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, home to Philipponnat.

One of Champagne’s most historic walled vineyards, the Clos rises dramatically above the Marne. Planted predominantly to Pinot Noir alongside Chardonnay, its steep, south-facing slope produces a blend of remarkable intensity and freshness.

It’s also a vineyard to which I’ve returned over the years, so today I’m sharing a few favourite Clos des Goisses moments, from tasting it among the vines, and most recently this year over lunch with François Philipponnat.

Back home in Sydney, I marked the occasion at home with friends, Philipponnat Blanc de Noirs 2018 - 100% Pinot Noir - paired with mushroom & truffle tarts and Valençay cheese.

Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses LV 1998 ~ gloriously invigorating bubbles, scented jasmine, baked brioche; long sweeping finish laced with honey minerals; so good but yet to hit its peak; thanks C for sharing✨🥂

Domaine Leroy Savigny-les-Beaune Les Narbantons 1997 ~ slight bott funk at the start which thankfully blown off after 15 mins of aeration; dried petals, hibiscus, figs, kirsch; a fine interplay of candied fruit & indulgent layers🍷
