A year ago, in June, I told @nemibrooks I wanted to write a short film about her red boots. I never expected to be here a year later with my first short film completed and premiering in film festivals.

"June" explores the intersectionality of culture, queerness, and religion. Hidden between a few poop jokes and crude references to "José's huevos," the film's message is about friendship, self-discovery, and forgiveness.

When @lolostevens read through the screenplay, she pointed out what I now realize is the universal through-line of "June”: June realizes her life and actions have an immense impact on others. This theme naturally reflected the production process, where every individual who put a piece of their heart into this project significantly influenced the film we’re sharing with you all.

Thank you to everyone who believed in “June.” Lauren Stevens, my friend and brilliant director, believed in this project from the first draft. Our production team, Karima Karkori, Amy Lyn Williams, and Joanna Gaspar have been running this marathon with me (and carrying me most of the way). Our cinematographer, Ziggy Van Koeverden has been my ride-or-die DP; he truly makes the impossible possible. Justin Marquez, our dedicated editor, has elevated this project to its full potential, leaving no stone unturned. And of course, the color team at Primary who made our dreams come true, with Ale Amato as the colorist, assisted by Matthew Stepanek, David Oh, and Philip Dystant, and color producer Alex Zhao. Thank you also to Kiarah Davis for your beautiful score, Ly Yang for your outstanding production design, and the cast/crew (on and off set): Rae, Nemi, Monica, Isa, Eric, Christian, Karli, DJ, Bradley, Jasmine, Laila.

Lastly, “June” wouldn’t have been possible without the endless love and support from my parents. Though they’re not on Instagram, let it be known that they slay.
