Two Letters, One Line: Inside Maddocks’ Minutes to Midnight Mark.

Frank Maddocks is an American creative director and Warner Records VP of Creative whose work has defined Linkin Park’s look for 25 years. After shaping Hybrid Theory’s stencil-and-soldier packaging, he was asked in 2006–07 to invent a mark that was iconic, memorable, and easy to draw, a stripped, almost punk monogram. The result was the circular LP: L and P locked into a single line inside a broken ring.

That Minutes to Midnight emblem became the band’s visual shorthand and was later stretched into hexagons, open triangles, and the 2024 From Zero circle. Maddocks kept designing with Mike Shinoda across A Thousand Suns, One More Light, and the reunion era, treating the logo as a living system rather than a fixed stamp. The portrait-and-process boards that circulate with his name show how one designer’s restraint turned two letters into one of rock’s most recognizable symbols.

For everyone asking about the shoot I mentioned yesterday…I don’t talk too many details on celeb/band shoots unless we are friends & they don’t mind.

Just know that was a great day to work with @crossesmusic along with some excellent colleagues @brianziff & @frankmaddocks & that it was personally a very cool moment for me (as shown here) 😘😉

☀️LET THE SUN SHINE DOWN ☀️

Our first single, “The Sun,” off our first full length record “Silver Stars” is streaming everywhere NOW ⏰💨

We’ve been building this one in the dark for a long, long time. A lot of hours, a lot of sacrifice, a lot of faith. Today it finally belongs to the world.

Shout to @adam_cichocki and @connorpriest from Timber for helping us take this one into outer space and @frankmaddocks for lending us his visual genius with some truly legendary art.

Big love to Gary and Chris for making things happen behind the scenes.

And endless respect to Henry, Lisa, and Mal for putting everything into these songs and helping turn this vision into something real.

The music’s here.

Go run up “The Sun.” Add it to your playlists. Send it to your people. Let it soundtrack the summer.

Then come celebrate with us..

The Number of the Beats" – 3 volumes. 6 joints per volume.

The Number of the Beats was a project designed to challenge myself to create a series of instrumental beat tape-style EPs across three volumes, with each volume containing six songs—hence the vocal phrase, "He will give you 6-6-6," heard throughout the series. I also wanted to lean into the obvious play on the phrase "The Number of the Beast" by incorporating tongue-in-cheek, '80s-era Satanic Panic imagery and heavy metal samples subtly woven throughout lo-fi and boom-bap beats.

This idea had been bouncing around in my head for years. It originated shortly after the release of a DJ-style mixtape that Frank Delgado and I created in collaboration with our buddy Slick's company, Dissizit. The project was a Dissizit x Decibel Devils shirt design and DJ mix collaboration released around 2010. The mixtape was titled Dissizit the Mixtape Volume 666.

Included in Slick's artwork for the collaboration was the phrase, "The Number of the Beats." For years, I found myself returning to the idea of creating three beat tapes centered around that phrase. Then, in the summer of 2022, while messing around with my SP-1200 drum machine and microKORG, I came up with what would eventually become a song called Electronic Patriots. That track reignited my desire to finally bring this project to life.

Once I had rough versions of the six songs that would make up Volume 1, I reached out to Frank Maddocks (Deftones, Linkin Park, Green Day, etc.) and asked if he would serve as the creative art director for the project. When he said yes, it further cemented the fact that this was officially happening. The time to be unserious or uncertain about this project was over. Well, this past weekend, Volume 3—the concluding volume in the series—was released on 6.6.26, bringing the project full circle and to its conclusion.

I want to thank all involved in the various stages and Volumes of this project:

Frank Maddocks, Nathan Garcia, Josh Grenko & Velvet Tone Studios, Shaun Lopez, Eric J. Breitenbach, Mark Valencia, Wes Fareas, Ricky Verrett, Zach Hill, Chino Moreno, Andrew Byrom, Carlos Almanza, Shannon Brooke.
