A very late post but a HUGE thank you to everyone who joined in with our family in September to build welcome kits for Afghani refugees. We were able to take five complete welcome kits to world relief because of your generosity. So grateful for the way y’all came together to meet the needs in our community.

“Because watercolor actually moves on the paper, it is the most active of all mediums, almost a performance art.” - Nita Engle  . What’s my FAVORITE watercolor paper, and what’s with the differences in textures??? . I’m always saying that watercolor feels like a dance between the artist & her tools, so I really love these words by Nita Engle. Another thing I always say? In watercolor, the tool that will make the most difference in your piece is your paper. I love making art approachable, so I wanted to show you the three most common paper textures used in watercolor. . I invite you to look really closely at the different textures (aka “toothless”) of these papers. There are three surface textures pictured, & here are some helpful pointers on each: . HOT: * The surface feels smooth to the touch * Prime painting option for very crisp, fine line details * Best surface to scan in for digital work, since you don’t have a background to remove * Dries the FASTEST! * To help remember which type of paper surface is smooth, I I like to think of this paper being ironed flat ie HOT. Thus having no bumps at all. COLD: * Medium textured (aka “tooth”) paper * The most commonly used surface in the world * The bumpy texture gives you extra interest as you paint AND * This surface allows more drying time, giving your paint longer to swirl (aka DANCE!) * It feels bumpy to the touch, so you could think of this paper as having ‘goosebumps’ because it’s cold! ROUGH: * Similar to Cold press, this paper has texture, & even more tooth * This paper is super tough – you can scrub the easiest with this texture * When this is the texture you begin with, imagine painting the bark of a tree. The texture alone does a lot of the work for you, bc pigment naturally settles into the grooves of the paper . This beautiful paper is made by @hahnemuehle_global & is a part of their new Collection. This isn’t an ad - I just love their company & their paper product! Materials: MUSIC: “Get you some” by Gibbs Paper: @hahnemuehle_global #thecollection series 140 lb / 300 gsm Brush: @princetonbrush

Who said you can’t have just as much fun virtually? (Ok.. I may have. But I am officially eating my words. Nom nom..) This weekend’s Galentine’s Soirèe was shared with a couple hundred of my dearest and newest friends from all over the globe. WHAT A FUN NIGHT. There was watercolor, food, lettering, bathrobes and a surprise sighting of my 1993 prom dress. Yup, I did. For my Galentine’s, of course. In all this pandemic mess, and the halt of my business as it was known (for bringing people together face to face) this was a massive lift to my spirit. I presume not only for me, but for several other ladies who messaged me with the kindest words after. Zoom, we probably won’t be besties.. but you certainly woo’d me into believing that community can still thrive even inside tiny little virtual squares and that my business can continue doing what it loves the most. #bringingwomentogether (Pics sent by guests.). More finished art and pics by guests are featured in Highlights on my profile. #wearesocialcreative #cultivatecommunity #womensupportingwomen #galentinesparty #virtualpartyideas #creativewomencommunity

CONGRATULATIONS to @freckleskelly for her winning caption on the "Caption This Photo" contest from a couple of weekends ago! Her prize is this fun + festive piece of mail. :) I'm planning on doing another caption contest soon ... it was so much fun to read through the creative captions, and obviously I had a ball making this envelope!⠀ .⠀ #mailart #envelopeart #snailmail #johnlennon #flourishing #bleedproofwhite #brauseef66nib #obliquepen #moderncalligraphy #janetstylecalligraphy #goldink #seattle #mailbox #snailmailrevolution #redenvelope #redandwhite #calligraphyart #contest #contestwinner

And the winner of the Caption This Photo contest from last week is ... @freckleskelly! "Wait, you're telling me it's not caLICKgraphy?" :) ⠀ .⠀ Honestly, there were so many amazingly creative captions that I ended up relying on likes to choose the best one. People seemed to love that caption as much as I did, thus its victory! Look for a photo of the winner's mail art later this week. ⠀ .⠀ #calligraphy #calligraphyvideo #captionthisphoto #contest #kaitlinstylecalligraphy #irongallink #brauseef66nib #rodgerspenbox #obliquepen #moderncalligraphy #irongall #lightbox #writing #asmr #asmrcalligraphy #scratchynib #handwriting #handwritten

Setting the table. We’re blessed and grateful for friends and family near and far. We’re waiting for flights to arrive so having dinner a bit later than usual. It has made for a relaxed day in the kitchen... Looking forward to lots of plant based, whole food goodness! 🥂
